  • Are you unable to aid loved ones who face issues with self sufficiency on their own? If so, you won't want to miss our next Zoom meeting, where you'll learn to find crucial assistance for choice, dignity, and control within your community. Guest speaker Matthew Parcasio from San Diego County Aging & Independence Services, will present an overview of nearly 30 programs and services offered by his agency and other community providers. Matthew has an MA in Gerontology and extensive experience caring for older individuals and adults living with disabilities. A question & answer period will follow the presentation. We'd like to know if you benefitted from any of these services in San Diego or wherever you live. With government budget cuts, we'd also like to know if these programs have been cut or eliminated. Let's explore the devastating difficulties and challenges too many people are facing alone, and learn what solutions are available in our communities. We look forward to your participation in this meeting as we overcome the harsh struggle to maintain autonomy and independence together. Hemlock Society of San Diego on Facebook
  • Acclaimed best-selling writer Gary Phillips delivers the 4th Annual Clara Breed Civil Liberties Lecture, named after heroic former San Diego Public Library director Clara E. Breed. Gary Phillips has written novels, short stories, comic books, and worked in TV. His latest novel "Ash Dark as Night" was chosen by Parade magazine as one of its best mysteries of 2024. Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, his landmark hard-boiled noir novel "Violent Spring" broke ground on depictions of Los Angeles as it existed in the halls of power and on the street in 1992. Son of a mechanic and a librarian with roots in the Texas Hill Country and the Mississippi Delta, Gary Phillips must keep writing to forestall his appointment at the crossroads. He has written more than 25 novels, short stories, comic books, and was a staff writer on FX’s SNOWFALL, about crack and the CIA in 1980s South Central Los Angeles. Culprits currently streaming on Hulu is based on the linked anthology "Culprits: The Heist Was Just the Beginning" he co-edited. Publishers Weekly named his recent novel "Ash Dark as Night" as one of the best mysteries of 2024. The Clara Breed Civil Liberties Lecture honors Miss Breed's triple legacy of service, decency, and advocacy on behalf of Japanese Americans wrongly imprisoned in concentration camps by the federal government during World War II. • UCSD professors Caroline Collins and Angela Booker discuss our current exhibition, "Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific." The exhibit re-centers the relationship between Black folks, water, and ships revealing the deep and historic connection between people of African descent and the Pacific Ocean. Most accounts of U.S. maritime histories are disproportionately populated by white seafarers. Yet, from the 16th to the 20th century, Black whalers, commercial mariners, fishers, explorers, soldiers, and sailors traveled the high seas along the Pacific Coast. The exhibit explores the stories of these mariners, their impact in shaping the American Pacific, and their legacy in the context of development of society and identity. • Holocaust survivor Gerald Szames to be interviewed by Sandra Scheller, the creator and curator of the "Remember Us The Holocaust" exhibit. On March 11, Lou Pechi, a Holocaust survivor and author, will be speaking in the Library at 6 p.m. His talk will focus on his childhood experiences, including being sent away from his parents to live with a Catholic family during the war. Born in the Croatian city of Zagreb, Louis “Lubo” Pechi was seven years old when the Germans invaded Yugoslavia. In response to the mounting anti-Semitic repression and strict laws prohibiting Jews from traveling, the Pechis converted to Catholicism and changed their identities in the hope of finding safety in Italy. While the Pechi family managed to escape to Rome, a series of unexpected events followed, marking a lengthy journey of survival for Lubo. Decades later, he began the arduous process of recovering the memories of his hidden life by writing his memoir "I Am Lubo: A Child Survivor from Yugoslavia." He was baptized Catholic, which saved him until he was eventually turned in. He was sent to prison, where he spent two days—six hours before the train that would have taken him to Auschwitz departed. Part of the "Remember Us The Holocaust (RUTH)" Exhibit series of speakers.
