Class Description Do you want to see your writing in magazines? Would you like to receive a check for what you write? If your goal is to write personal essays and get paid for them, this is the class for you. We will go through idea generation, how to find publications that are right for your idea, and how to pitch to editors and locate their e-mail addresses. You will finish the class with several ideas for essays, where to pitch them, and with a list of resources to build those bylines! Susanna Peredo Swap is an award-winning producer, journalist, and film director with over twenty-five years of experience as an arts administrator, actor, jazz vocalist, arts advocate, and public relations specialist. While working for the San Diego International Airport Art Program she curated 80+ exhibitions with some of San Diego’s best museums, artists and galleries; as well as a fantastic roster of talent for its performing arts series. She currently serves on the San Diego Museum Council; the Board of Women in Tourism & Hospitality International; the Board of the San Diego Press Club; the Advisory Board for the Institute of Contemporary Art, San Diego; and Community Advisory Committee for the Burnham Center for Community Advancement. She recently served as the Arts & Culture Co-Lead for World Design Capital San Diego Tijuana 2024 and on the Advisory Committee for UCSD-TV’s new ARTS Channel. She has previously served on the Board of Directors for the San Diego Art Institute; as Board Vice President of the Alliance Française de San Diego; Board Vice President of the San Diego REPertory Theatre; and Vice Chair of the Port of San Diego’s Public Art Committee. Susanna is a magna cum laude graduate of San Diego State University where she majored in Humanities and minored in French. She holds a Professional Certificate in The Cycle: Management of Successful Arts and Cultural Organizations from the Devos Institute of Arts Management, University of Maryland; a Professional Certificate in Business for Arts and Nonprofit Arts Organizations from University of San Diego; a Certificate in Photography: Images and Techniques from University of California, San Diego; studied Art History at the Université Paris Sorbonne (Paris IV); and History of Video Art at the École du Louvre in Paris, France. Her passion for the arts inspired her to found Vanguard Culture, a nonprofit uplifting San Diego’s creative workforce. Under her leadership, the organization has earned 80+ excellence in journalism awards, two Gold Anthem Awards by the Webby’s, and a National Geographic feature. On Wednesday, June 10 at 6:30 p.m., join the Coronado Public Library as we welcome UCSD’s Dr. Terrance Sejnowski who will share insights into the future impacts of AI on education and learning. Classrooms, teachers, lessons, homework, reading, writing, and arithmetic look the same today as they did when we were children, what will the future bring to education? How will artificial intelligence (AI) and personal social robots shape the next generation? This lecture is based his personal experiences with "Learning How to Learn," a wildly popular Massive Open Online Course (MOOC), with 6 million viewers in 200 countries, his insights from how brains learn, and the recent developments in AI described in his book ChatGPT and the Future of AI. This free lecture is open to all. Terry Sejnowski received his Ph.D. in physics from Princeton University. He was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Neurobiology at Harvard Medical School before joining the faculty at Johns Hopkins, where he was a Professor of Biophysics. He currently holds the Francis Crick Chair at The Salk Institute for Biological Studies and is a Distinguished Professor of Biology and Computer Science and Engineering at the University of California, San Diego, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. He also is the founding editor-in-chief of Neural Computation and is currently President of the Neural Information Processing Systems Foundation Board. In 1992, Sejnowski co-authored "The Computational Brain" with Patricia Churchland and in 2002 the book "Liars, Lovers, and Heroes; What the New Brain Science Reveals About How We Become Who We Are with Steven R. Complimentary Entry | No Reservations Required Brazilian Jazz Night brings together a group of standout Southern California musicians for an evening celebrating the rhythm, warmth, and beauty of Brazil’s musical tradition. At the center is vocalist Lexi Pulido, whose expressive voice and natural feel for the music bring elegance and soul to classic bossa nova and samba repertoire. Leading the ensemble on drums, Matthew Elton Smith brings a deep sense of groove and musical direction to the group, blending jazz sensibility with the subtle pulse and flow of Brazilian rhythms. His playing helps guide the ensemble while leaving space for the kind of spontaneous interaction that makes live jazz exciting. The band also features vibraphonist Ian Harland, whose shimmering sound and melodic improvisations add a unique color to the group. Guitarist Aaron Lind provides the harmonic foundation with the smooth, rhythmic feel that is central to Brazilian music, while bassist Harley Magsino anchors everything with warm tone, lyrical lines, and an effortless pocket. Jason Rogalski will be doing a subtle performance art action at The Wishing Machine (Chollas Lake) at noon on March 21 to celebrate Spring Equinox & the one year anniversary of this artwork. The performance will be the reading of a book called, “Jonathan Livingston Seagull” out loud. He will attempt to play the violin a bit every few pages. He does not know how to play the violin.

This engaging reception and talk by Bronwen Wilson will explore the poses and gestures in Renaissance portraits, revealing the inventive ways women - led by the trailblazing Sofinisba Anguissola - used "the mute eloquence of gesture" to make their paintings speak. In an era when portraiture was often dismissed as a mechanical skill suited to women perceived to lack imagination, these artists defied convention. They infused their sitters with personality, narrative, and emotion - proving that a glance, a hand, or the tilt of a head could speak volumes. Carter Chair in European Art at UCLA, where she also directs the Center for 17th- and 18th-Century Studies and the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. Her research focuses on early modern visual culture, with particular interests in portraiture, physiognomy, and cross-cultural exchange. She has published widely on these topics and is the editor and co-editor of several recent volumes.
