The winter series opens on Sunday, January 26, with the return of celebrated Venezuelan pianist-composer-arranger Edward Simon, joined by his longtime trio members bassist Reuben Rogers (also known for his work with Charles Lloyd) and drummer Adam Cruz (also known for his work with Danilo Pérez). Simon’s last Athenaeum performance as a leader was with his project Femeninas: Songs of Latin American Women, which featured vocalist Magos Herrera. He returns to the library to celebrate the release of a new trio album, Latin American Songbook, vol. 2, which has a special focus on the Afro-Caribbean musical traditions of his native Venezuela. Simon is well known to Athenaeum audiences from his high-energy performance last summer with guitarist-vocalist Camila Meza and past appearances with the SFJAZZ Collective and the Steel House trio with Scott Colley and Brian Blade. A musical created for and by San Diego's South Bay is ready to bring the swap meet to the stage. "Pásale Pásale" is a hyperlocal production that focuses on the resilience of the Latinx community.

By the time Avi Kaplan launched his solo career with 2017's "Sage and Stone", he'd already built an audience that stretched across the globe, racking up three GRAMMY Awards as a member of the platinum-selling vocal group, Pentatonix. As the group's profile continued to climb though, Avi knew he needed to return to his own artistic foundation — to the organic roots, country and soul music that had provided the soundtrack to his upbringing in rural California. Now, following 2020’s well-received EP, "I’ll Get By" and 2022’s highly acclaimed LP, "Floating On A Dream" (produced by Shooter Jennings), Avi is set to release "Feel Alright", a new 5-track EP on Fantasy Records that further showcases his extraordinary artistic ability. Produced by Kaplan along with Reid Leslie (Devon Gilfillian), "Feel Alright" blends modern sounds with classic influences into something inventive, fresh and wholly original. The new music is the start of a busy 2024 for the celebrated singer-songwriter. Between mid-May and mid-June, Avi will visit 16 cities on a tour across the U.S., with confirmed dates in the UK and Europe set for September. Guthrie Brown, a Nashville transplant by way of "old Montana" began playing the guitar at age six. By the age of seventeen, he journeyed to Nashville to pursue the dream of being a professional songwriter, recording & performing artist. After settling in Music City, he recorded and produced his first self-titled EP, which got the attention of Nashville's premiere independent radio station, WRLT Lightning 100. Capitalizing on the initial success of his debut EP, Guthrie recorded and released his second EP "Spirit of the Elk" with producer Stuart Mathis (The Wallflowers, Lucinda Williams). Following his second release, he recruited his longtime friends and musicians John Ogelby (drums), Will Honaker (bass, keys) and John McNally (guitar) to join the band. Nathalie Joachim is a GRAMMY-nominated performer and composer. The Haitian-American artist is hailed for being “a fresh and invigorating cross-cultural voice” (The Nation). Her creative practice centers an authentic commitment to storytelling and human connectivity while advocating for social change and cultural awareness, gaining her the reputation of being “powerful and unpretentious.” (The New York Times) Ms. Joachim is an Assistant Professor of Composition at Princeton University and is regularly commissioned to write for orchestra, instrumental and vocal ensembles, dance, and interdisciplinary theater. Recent and upcoming highlights include new works for the New York Philharmonic, Carnegie Hall, Grant Park Music Festival and more. Her landmark project, Fanm d’Ayiti, an evening-length work for flute, voice, string quartet and electronics, celebrates and explores her personal Haitian heritage and received a GRAMMY nomination for Best World Music Album. American singer-songwriter Clairo rose to prominence following the viral success of the music video for her lo-fi single "Pretty Girl" in 2017. Her debut studio album Immunity (2019) received critical acclaim and spawned the singles "Bags" and "Sofia", the latter of which became her first single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Clairo's second studio album, Sling, was released in 2021. Upon its release, the album received critical acclaim and saw commercial success, debuting in the top 20 of the US Billboard 200. Nominee of Venturous Play List, this comedy-drama features two sisters, Jean and Susan, who can’t foresee a future together with their opposing world views. Into their lives enters Edward, a Black journalist who visits the Desert Cactus Motel with them and when another family member comes west, new territory is laid bare. The play reading features Sandy Campbell, Linda Libby, Derwood Murray with direction by Vanessa Dinning. A community Conversation will follow the play with special guests, playwright Catherine Filloux, The League of Women Voters, and moderators from across San Diego County. Join us at the Kensington-Normal Heights Library for a Free Persian Music Concert in the park. The music will be jazz inspired with a Persian flair. There will be a mix of Eastern and Western Instruments. This is a monthly music series on every 3rd Saturday. Music is by Dornob Collective led by Farhad Bahrami. Farhad teaches World Music and Middle East Ensemble at Grossmont College. Dornob's mission is to cross cultural bridges through music. Recommended for all ages.
