The Book Catapult proudly welcomes our pal Jim Ruland for the release of his new novel, "Mightier Than the Sword" on Friday, November 6 at 7 p.m. Jim will be joined by a cavalcade of authors: Grace Krilanovich (author of "Orange Eats Creeps" and the brand new "Acid Green Velvet"), Adrian Van Young (author of the novel "Rough Beast"), Tammy Greenwood (author of the novel "Everything Has Happened"), and Molly McCloy (author of the new memoir "Nine Grudges: The Spiteful Origins of the Happiest Dyke on Earth.") What do a gambler, a poet, a punk, and a writer of westerns have in common? Four college professors embark on a crime spree in Northern Arizona in 1993. They start by robbing an off-campus bookstore, but when things don't go as planned, the book bandits are drawn into a bigger, bolder caper involving corrupt university officials, drug-dealing frat boys, Navajo ex-cons, and a mysterious golden pen. Steeped in the lore of the West, "Mightier Than the Sword" is a twisty, pulp take on the dirtiest job of them all: working as a part-time professor in a college town. Mannerism originated primarily in Italy. It lasted from approximately 1530-1600 and was a reaction to the harmonious classicism and idealized naturalism of the High Renaissance art as practiced by Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael. Mannerist artists created a style that was characterized by artificiality and unique coloration. A thoroughly self-conscious cultivation of elegance and technical facility were part of this artistic movement. Sophisticated indulgence in the bizarre helped to distinguish its artists. The figures in Mannerist art frequently had graceful, but strangely elongated limbs, small heads, and stylized facial features while their poses seemed difficult or contrived. Painters such as Jacopo Pontormo and Francesco Parmigianino exemplified this unusual and fascinating style of painting. Mannerism began to wane after 1600 as the Baroque began to take hold throughout Europe. The evolution of the movement and its artists will be the focus of this docent-led virtual talk. Weeks of altars, workshops, film, food, and a candlelight procession — the Day of the Dead as Sherman Heights has kept it since 1994. Season: October 15 – November 2, 2026 Where: 2258 Island AvenueSan Diego, CA 92102 About: The Día de los Muertos celebration at the Sherman Heights Community Center is a weeks-long community festivity that preserves the Day of the Dead tradition, itself a millennial practice. It began in 1994, when Sr. Domingo Sandoval, a local resident, approached the Center asking for a space to build an altar in honor of his loved ones. Over the years the festivity has grown to include onsite community altars, front-yard altars throughout the neighborhood, craft workshops, online tutorials and videos, student tours and food tastings, a procession, and a fundraising event. The tradition is a joyous occasion, when the memory of our ancestors and the continuity of life are celebrated. Festivities run from mid-October through November 2 and are open to the public. Shelter to Soldier will host its 3rd annual Salute to Paws 5K & Gratitude Festival for Dogs presented by Avion Law on Saturday, November 7, at Fox Point Farms (1200 Fox Point Farms Lane, Encinitas, CA 92024). This one-of-a-kind, family- and dog-friendly event will bring together runners, dog lovers, military supporters, and community members for a morning of fitness, gratitude, and fun, while raising funds to support Shelter to Soldier’s mission of “Saving Lives, Two at a Time.” The event will begin with a scenic 5K run/walk through Fox Point Farms and surrounding Encinitas trails. Registration opens at 8 a.m., followed by an all-levels yoga flow at 8:45 a.m. and 5K kickoff at 9:30 a.m. Leashed, social dogs are welcome to participate alongside their owners, with water and shade available on site. After crossing the finish line, participants and their pups are invited to stay for the Gratitude Festival for Dogs from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., a celebration of the special bond between humans and their four-legged companions. As Southern California’s only Gratitude Festival for Dogs, the event offers a day of fun, connection, and appreciation for the dogs who bring so much joy and purpose to our lives. Guests will enjoy live music, farm-fresh pizza, street-style tacos, beer and Tito’s Handmade Vodka cocktails, along with a silent auction, local vendors and sponsor activations. Visitors can also meet adoptable dogs from Thrive Animal Rescue and learn more about giving a rescue dog a loving forever home. Established to foster an appreciation and awareness of Latino Cultural Celebration, Dia de los Muertos offers free family-friendly programming to North County residents of Latino heritage while uniting people of all backgrounds and traditions.
