  • Join us for lunch at Pacifica Del Mar on Thursday July 16th at 11:30 a.m. as we welcome Dan Werb to discuss and sign "Our Wild Familiars: How Animals Are Adapting to Cities and Reshaping the Natural World." The ticket will include one copy of the book and lunch at Pacifica including tax, gratuity and a beverage (soda, tea, coffee). A vegetarian option will be available. About the book: A dazzling journey into the hidden lives of synanthropes, the wild animals who’ve found ingenious ways to survive and thrive in human communities—from award-winning writer and scientist Dan Werb. Synanthropes have always been an immutable part of the tapestry of our lives. They are the reason we hear birdsong in the morning and skittering throughout the day, and why we take such pains to fix lids to our garbage cans. But they are so much more than that, too: epidemic vectors, churners of soil, ecosystem evolvers, spiritual lodestars, and, sometimes, sharp-toothed marauders making their way through our most intimate spaces with cruel intent. But beyond their quotidian impact on our lives, synanthropes have a critical part to play in how our communities are shaped and how sustainably they function. These creatures are ambassadors from nature, arbiters of our planet’s future, and a key influence on our species’ ongoing evolution; and recently, something essential has shifted with them. We are in a fraught era of environmental disruption, habitat destruction, and human population expansion that is ravaging formerly wild and untouched habitats. That’s caused us to become ever more inundated with synanthropes, which are bringing delight, chaos and danger to our doorstep. These species, so long dismissed, are forcing us to reckon with them—from the hundreds of thousands of raccoons in urban spaces that spread our refuse no matter how many "raccoon-proof" bags and bins we invent, to the invasive kudzu plants that grow a foot a day, enveloping houses, telephone poles, trees, and any other structures into their green abyss. Now, as urban spaces increasingly become wild spaces, we have a choice: continue to resist them by any means necessary, or take the opportunity to promote a more harmonious coexistence. Through vivid storytelling, "Our Wild Familiars" brings to spectacular life the world’s most successful synanthropes, from bats, raccoons, and crows, to some of its weirdest, including the Giant Pacific Octopus. Acting as a guide to the curious, Werb reveals how the cracks in our millennia-long efforts to shield ourselves against the outside world might just lead us to a new and necessary balance with nature—or to an ever more savage future. • The fourth annual Punches in the Piazza returns to Little Italy San Diego on Friday, September 11, 2026, bringing together amateur boxing, philanthropy and a powerful tribute to those affected by the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001. Taking place at 6 p.m. in the Piazza della Famiglia, the beloved charitable event honors the legacy of Hall of Fame boxing promoter Bobby DePhilippis and raises funds for the Washington Elementary School Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation. Held on the 25th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, this year's event carries special significance as attendees gather to recognize first responders, remember those whose lives were forever changed by the tragedy and support organizations dedicated to serving children, families and communities in need. Punches in the Piazza combines USA Boxing-sanctioned amateur bouts, community engagement and philanthropic giving in a unique outdoor setting in the heart of Little Italy. Throughout the evening, guests will enjoy nine amateur boxing matches featuring local athletes, special ceremonial tributes, silent auction opportunities, raffle prizes, VIP experiences and commemorative merchandise. The event has become an annual tradition bringing together boxing enthusiasts, first responders and residents for an evening centered on remembrance, unity and giving back. Founded in honor of Bobby DePhilippis, the event celebrates the lasting impact of one of San Diego's most influential boxing figures. During his career, DePhilippis promoted more than 60 boxing events at the El Cortez Convention Center and was inducted into the Boxing Hall of Fame in 2012. Today, the Bobby D. Foundation, established by his daughter Michelle DePhilippis, carries on his legacy by supporting community programs with a focus on providing opportunities and resources for underprivileged children throughout San Diego. All proceeds from the event will benefit the Washington Elementary School Foundation and the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, a nonprofit that honors the sacrifice of military service members, veterans and first responders while supporting their families through housing assistance programs. Organizers aim to raise $50,000 through ticket sales, sponsorships, donations and fundraising activities throughout the evening. As one of the few public events in San Diego commemorating the anniversary of 9/11, Punches in the Piazza offers a uniquely meaningful experience that blends remembrance, community connection and charitable impact. Attendees will have the opportunity to reflect, connect and contribute while enjoying an exciting evening of amateur boxing and entertainment. Visit: https://www.bobbyde.org/ Bobby D.
