Steven Schick met and grew to know the venerable composer Chou Wen-chung at UC San Diego on the several occasions Chou was invited to San Diego by Schick’s colleague Roger Reynolds. Professor Chou was a champion of the music of Edgard Varèse and was himself one of the most important composers of the 20th and 21st centuries. The links between Professor Chou and the department strengthened over the years--Lei Liang on UC San Diego has been a steadfast friend and advocate of Professor Chou's music. After his death in 2019, Liang and Schick brought all of Professor Chou’s percussion instruments, including many that belonged to Varèse, to UC San Diego where they now comprise the core of a collection of historically important percussion instruments. Each year, a UC San Diego graduate student is commissioned for a new piece that uses or is inspired by the collection. This year, the newly commissioned pieces are by graduate students Jiyoung Ko and Myles Ortiz-Green. Guitarist Peter Sprague loves jazz. But he also digs deep into musical history and unearths some sonic gems from the Beatles, Jimmy Webb and Brazil’s Antonio Carlos Jobim. For this concert, he connects with vocalist Allison Adams Tucker, pianist Danny Green, drummer Duncan Moore and bassist Mack Leighton for an evening of good sounds, good vibes and good times. The group recently released three albums: “All You Need Is Love” (Beatles songs), “Christmas Time Is Here” (holiday music) and “Peter Sprague Plays Jobim” (Brazilian music). Theirs is a vivid tour through three-dimensional jazz! “Stories From Home” is a series of dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano, Chicano and Mexican American communities in the American Southwest. Choreographer Yvonne Montoya and a diverse cast of dancers draw upon personal histories as well as stories of ancestral knowledge. “Stories From Home” is a vessel for personal and specific tales, while also offering a broader look at various cultural traditions throughout the Southwest. The work addresses themes such as the Bracero Program, the creation of the atomic bomb in Northern New Mexico and illness related to U.S. government projects, the loss of language because of 1940s Americanization programs, the experience of the Sephardim people during and after the Spanish Inquisition, family, love and querencia. An artist meet-and-greet will take place March 10 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cross Cultural Center.
