The San Diego Wooden Boat Festival is the premier event for Southern Californian wooden boat enthusiasts! The festival provides a rare opportunity for the general public to view some of the most beautiful and well maintained wooden water crafts both vintage & new. The weekend festivities include live music, food, a variety of booths, activities for kids and a raffle with a large assortment of valuable items donated from local businesses. All proceeds from the weekend will benefit the local Sea Scouts. Note: Many vessels will be open to the public for on-board viewing. All attendees will be required to remove their shoes before boarding any boat. We ask that you tread lightly as many of the wooden boats in the festival are vintage. Join us for a creative, hands-on workshop at the River Center at Grant Park. During this needle-felting workshop, you’ll create your own felted bat to take home while learning fun facts about Big Brown Bats and their vital role in keeping our river ecosystem healthy. Participants will also have the opportunity to take their new Bat Buddy on a guided Bat Walk, where you’ll learn how bats support the health of the San Diego River and surrounding communities. It was the summer of 1979 and Disco had taken over the world. For the first time, Black, gay and female artists were dominating the charts. But a backlash was brewing. On a July night in 1979, nearly 50,000 White teenagers descended on Chicago’s Comiskey Park for “Disco Demolition Night,” where they destroyed records made by mostly Black artists. Many say that the birth of house music comes from this fateful evening. Mixing cinematic recreation, archival materials, and revelatory interviews with the pioneers of house music, MOVE YA BODY: THE BIRTH OF HOUSE tells this story in a new way, offering a celebration of the power the dance floor has to liberate us all, and an appreciation of the artists that kept the beat going all night long. "More Than Rhythm: A Black Music Series" is an engaging public library film series exploring the sweeping history and evolution of African diasporic music. It traces the journey of rhythm and sound from the West African roots of the banjo to the electronic beats of modern house and funk music.
