Leucadia resident, Steve White, was a beloved singer, songwriter, and blues guitarist who passed away in April 2011 at age 61. Steve developed his own style as a one-man band, playing baritone guitar in non-standard tuning with a percussive hand technique and pinky slide, along with an amplified footboard and killer blues harp. Steve played across the United States and toured Europe twice a year, performing for thousands of people who knew and loved his music. He played many times for San Diego Folk Heritage and was always generous with his time, helping to set up and tear down for many SDFH concerts, when he didn’t have a gig of his own. SDFH is dedicating March 15, 2026 (the day after his birthday) to remembering Steve. From 4 to 6 p.m., his friends and fellow performers Joe Rathburn, David Beldock, Shawn Rolhf and Steve Denyes, Luisa Corredor and Ignacio Arango, and Larry and Jo Ann Sinclair will be singing some of Steve’s songs and some of their original songs about Steve. Afterwards, Alda Lael, Steve’s life partner, will be hosting a reception with vegetarian food, followed by a showing of Clint Burkett and Tom Zizzi’s documentary film about "Steve, Painting the World with Music." The National Endowment for the Arts, managed in California by the California Arts Council, and regionally by the City of San Diego Cultural Affairs in association with Write Out Loud, present Poetry Out Loud a national poetry recitation competition for high school students. The San Diego Regional Finals take place this year on Tuesday, February 3rd at 6 p.m. The event is free and the public is encouraged to join our student participants and their families at the Neil Morgan Auditorium at San Diego Central Library. Performances are judged on criteria including voice and articulation, evidence of understanding, and accuracy. The National Endowment for the Arts has created free, standards-based curriculum materials to support Poetry Out Loud, including a teacher’s guide, lesson plans, an online anthology, posters, and video and audio on the art of recitation. Although we are only now coming to appreciate how, the effects of these changes have been felt by all living creatures for more than a century. In this talk, I will share three hot topics of research on how climate change affects us and the ecosystem we are embedded in. First, I will share how global warming is making us hotheaded, with potentially disastrous consequences for our society. Second, I will discuss how climate change is helping spread old diseases to new areas, and also leading to the emergence of never-before-seen pathogens. And finally, I’ll try to switch from doom to mood by telling you about how our jellyfish and cephalopod cousins might be coping with climate change. Come prepared to learn something new, “weather” you like it or not. About the Speaker Aalok Varma is a biologist and avid science communicator. Formally trained in neuroscience, he was awarded his PhD from the National Centre for Biological Sciences (NCBS-TIFR), Bangalore. He is currently a postdoctoral fellow in Dr. Loren Looger’s lab at UC San Diego, where he’s trying to decode the mysteries of cephalopod biology. When not working in the lab, he spends his time reading books, playing tennis, swimming, or just being a couch potato. His blood is almost always caffeinated, yet sleep is his superpower. MLK Day of Service is a federal holiday dedicated to the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in honor of his legacy and passion for serving others. Legislation signed in 1983 marked the birthday of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. as a federal holiday. In 1994, Congress designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service and charged the Corporation for National and Community Service with leading this effort. Each year, on the third Monday in January, the MLK Day of Service is observed as a "day on, not a day off." MLK Day of Service is intended to empower individuals, strengthen communities, bridge barriers, create solutions to social problems, and move us closer to Dr. King's vision of a "Beloved Community."
