Vin Deighan (aka Frank Quitely), Laurence Grove (director of the Stirling Maxwell Centre for the Study of Text/Image Cultures at the University of Glasgow and president of the International Bande Dessinée Society), Antonio Ianotta (University of San Diego), and Van Tarpley (San Diego State University) join moderator Elizabeth Pollard (co-director, Center for Comics Studies at SDSU) for a discussion exploring the similarities and differences of English-language comics, French bande dessinée, Italian fumetti, and Japanese manga. The astonishing and heartwarming story of George Lee, a pioneering Asian dancer who originated a featured role in George Balanchine’s "The Nutcracker" 70 years ago as a teenage immigrant from China.

Duo Festudgioso presents a diverse program for flute and guitar, exploring music from the Baroque to the contemporary era. The concert opens with Vivaldi’s elegant Sonata in F major, followed by the lyrical richness of Villa-Lobos in Bachianas brasileiras No. 5 and Distribuição de flores. Frederic Hand’s The Maverick brings modern rhythms and expressive interplay, and the program concludes with Piazzolla’s Histoire du Tango, a vivid journey through the evolution of tango from its early roots to the concert stage of today. Duo Festudgioso is a San Diego–based flute and guitar duo formed by flutist Dr. Yana Yan and guitarist Dr. Ming-Jui Liu. The ensemble brings together the warm, intimate sonorities of flute and guitar, presenting music that is expressive, colorful, and approachable. Their repertoire spans Classical and Romantic works, folk-inspired melodies, and the rhythmic vitality of tango. Duo Festudgioso has performed at venues throughout Southern California, including Roxbury Community Center (Beverly Hills), Encinitas Library, Encinitas Community and Senior Center, and La Jolla/Riford Library. Dr. Yana Yan, Flutist, is an active performer and dedicated educator based in San Diego. A winner of the 2024 La Jolla Symphony Emerging Artist Competition, she has appeared in concerts across the United States. In recent seasons, she has performed extensively in chamber recitals with her ensembles Duo Festudgioso and Connessa Collective throughout Southern California. Yan has held faculty positions at Augustana College and Black Hawk College. She earned her Bachelor of Music in Flute and Piano from the Wuhan Conservatory of Music, her Master of Music from the University of Minnesota, Twin Cities, and her Doctor of Musical Arts from the Frost School of Music at the University of Miami. More information is available at yanayanflute.com. Dr. Ming-Jui Liu, Composer and Guitarist, is a San Diego–based guitarist and composer whose work encompasses performance, composition, and pedagogy. His music and performances have been presented in Taiwan, the United States, and internationally across South America, Europe, and Asia. As a soloist and chamber musician, he has appeared at festivals and institutions including the I Seminário Internacional de Violão do IFCE, Long Island Guitar Festival, Qinling International Guitar Festival, and Résonance Guitar Music Festival, and has given a masterclass at Hunter College (New York). The Ilan Lael Foundation proudly presents a never-before-seen piece by the late James Hubbell at the one-day exhibit titled "Collaborators and Friends: James Hubbell, Peter Mitten & Wendell Perry," on Sunday, February 22, 2026, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Circle Center Art Garden. The exhibition celebrates the work of James Hubbell alongside two of his closest artistic collaborators, Peter Mitten and Wendell Perry. On view will be sculptures, watercolors, and collages by Hubbell, as well as a new collaborative sculpture by Mitten and Perry. Together, the works highlight more than four decades of creative partnership among the three artists, whose collaborations include notable public sculptures in San Diego, such as "Sea Nymph" on Shelter Island’s waterfront. Join the Ilan Lael Foundation in honoring Hubbell’s legacy and the enduring creative bonds he shared with his collaborators at this one-day-only event. Workshop 10:30 a.m. - 11:45 a.m. Art and science intersect with elin o’Hara slavick’s art that maps radioactive residuum and Dr. David Richardson’s epidemiological studies of radiation’s human impact. O’Hara slavick, who wrote “Bomb After Bomb: A Violent Cartography” and “After Hiroshima,” is an internationally exhibiting artist who captures the lingering effects of radiation with autoradiographs and creates contact prints of rubbings of trees and architecture exposed to atomic bombs in Hiroshima, Nagasaki and Fukushima. Richardson, an epidemiologist who has conducted studies of cancer among U.S. federal nuclear workers and Japanese survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, is the lead writer on the United Nations Committee on Epidemiological Studies of Radiation and Cancer (UNSCEAR). The duo is visiting from UC Irvine, where o’Hara slavick was artist in residence at the College of Health Sciences for the past three years and Richardson is associate dean for research in public health and a professor of environmental and occupational health. In this dynamic presentation, the artist and scientist discuss how they align their practices within the past, present and future of our shared nuclear realities.
