UC San Diego Global Initiatives has partnered with San Diego Sister Cities to present the first Indigenous Sustainable Design Forum, happening November 21, 2024, at UC San Diego Park & Market. The Indigenous Sustainable Design Forum represents an extraordinary international gathering poised to transform San Diego’s sustainability paradigm. Co-hosted by the Kumeyaay and Maasai, the Forum will bring together global Indigenous leaders to engage in a dynamic panel discussion. Covering topics such as ecological health, welfare, art, culture, and resource sustainability, these panels offer diverse perspectives and practical insights to integrate Indigenous traditional knowledge and promote sustainable practices locally in San Diego. The event will also serve as the launch of a virtual reality program preserving cultural ceremonies and Indigenous heritage, aiming to foster cultural understanding, preserve traditions, and nurture empathy, amplifying Indigenous voices to celebrate cultural diversity. Participants will experience how the Maasai utilizes VR to document ancient Rites of Passage ceremonies recognized on UNESCO’s urgent safeguarding list, enrich intergenerational learning, champion Indigenous culture, and forge community connections to advance heritage preservation and appreciation. Attendees will also experience vibrant cultural entertainment, including traditional dances, music, and authentic heritage. These performances are not just captivating—they are crucial for education and fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation of Indigenous peoples and their sustainable practices. Captivating cultural exhibits and art displays that showcase the rich heritage and creative expressions of Indigenous communities. These exhibits serve as powerful mediums for storytelling, expressing cultural values, and highlighting the interconnectedness between Indigenous peoples and the environment. The Indigenous Bazaar provides an engaging space to explore traditional clothing, crafts, and sustainable products. Highlighting Indigenous films, the event will showcase compelling works, including “We Are Guardians,” produced by award-winning filmmaker Leonardo DiCaprio. This film sheds light on Indigenous Peoples’ crucial role in safeguarding the Amazon Rainforest. Attendees will have a chance to meet Puyr Tembe, the lead figure in the film, whose activism in environmental justice is deeply inspiring, particularly her efforts in forest conservation in the Amazon. This is an opportunity to explore the rich traditions, sustainability practices, and contributions of Indigenous cultures—all in celebration of Native American Heritage Month. Whale Watch Weekend and Intertidal Life Festival, sponsored by the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation, celebrates the annual gray whale migration, visible from the western overlooks at Cabrillo National Monument - San Diego’s only national park. This 2-day event brings together scientists, nonprofits, authors, park rangers and other experts presenting on an array of topics including marine mammal acoustics, ocean conservation strategies, environmental sciences and more. Visitors can enjoy guided tours, live animal interactions, themed crafts, and activities for all ages. In 1996, Peter Hessler was sent as a Peace Corps volunteer to Fuling, a small city on the Yangtze. Almost all of his students had grown up in rural homes, often in poverty, and usually they were the first members of their extended family to enter higher education. After teaching for two years, Hessler wrote his first book, “River Town,” and he became The New Yorker’s Beijing correspondent. For more than two decades, he stayed in close touch with his former students, observing how they negotiated China’s Reform era. In 2019, Hessler returned to teach again in the same region, at Sichuan University. In the classroom he met members of the next generation of students, almost all of whom had grown up in urban middle-class homes that had been restricted to a single child. While teaching, Hessler also revisited Fuling and the people he had taught in the 1990s, an experience that helped him gain a new perspective on China’s transformation. One of the most legendary bands to hail from San Diego, the B-Side Players have spent the last three decades establishing a reputation as one of the most eclectic, genre-defining bands of their day. The nine-member band can hardly be described using typical genre conventions, blending elements of funk, rock, jazz, and hip-hop with gritty street samba, Cumbia, and other sounds common in Latin America. Their Dec. 7 performance at UC San Diego’s Park & Market marks their final show of the year and celebrates the last 30 years of their prolific career. The 90-minute performance will also feature an intimate Q&A with the audience, during which fans can hear unheard insights about the band’s history. Embark on an immersive journey through light and sound at City Lights, a new audio-visual experience opening December 6 at Quartyard in East Village. Created by digital artist Ben Guerrette, this 50-minute walkable adventure combines interactive light displays, soundscapes, and cutting-edge digital art inspired by the energy of urban life. City Lights invites visitors to explore six unique zones featuring lasers, LED sculptures, and projection mapping, illuminating San Diego’s winter nights. City Lights runs Thursday–Sunday through Jan. 19, 2025, offering an all-ages experience with a full bar and curated cocktails for guests 21+.
