Join us for a powerful morning of remembrance, nature, and cultural history as WorldBeat Cultural Center hosts the 4th Annual Harriet Tubman Freedom Birdwatch in honor of Juneteenth and the legacy of Black resistance and liberation. This year’s experience will take place in and around WorldBeat Center’s gardens, where participants will engage in guided birdwatching, cultural storytelling, and hands-on learning. In partnership with Celebrate Urban Birds and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology, we’ll be using the Merlin Bird ID app to identify local birds by sight and sound. We’ll also reflect on the important role of birds in history—especially how Harriet Tubman used the call of the barred owl as a secret signal during Underground Railroad missions. The Spreckels Organ Society presents the 38th Annual San Diego International Summer Organ Festival, the largest organ festival in the United States, featuring the historic Spreckels Organ, the largest open-air musical instrument in the world, with 5,098 pipes of up to 32-feet long, and nine percussion instruments located throughout the building. This weeks featured concert is “Organ Four Hands & Four Feet” with Sunkyung Noh & Grant Smith. The summer-long festival – directed by Raúl Prieto Ramírez, Spreckels Organ Society’s Artistic Director and San Diego’s Civic Organist – takes place in the heart of Balboa Park, from July 13 through Sept. 7. These 90-minute, free admission concerts by acclaimed international artists are brought to the Spreckels Organ Pavilion each Monday evening at 7:30 p.m. by the Spreckels Organ Society. The concerts are free thanks to the support of the Society’s sponsors, donors, members and volunteers. This is the second session of a 4-part series focused on AI. Join us for this timely and thought-provoking session with Shelly Skinner, Chief, AI Solutions and Governance at Salience AI, and Tulay Muezzinoglu, an AI Engineer working in the public sector. Ethical concerns arise with the explosive growth of AI. The way AI is developed and used must take into account transparency, accountability, sustainability, bias, and human agency and wellbeing. The development and implementation raises the moral question “just because you can, does this mean you should?” The world requires AI systems that work for the good of humanity and for the environment. This talk will cover moral and ethical questions raised by the development and incomprehensible scale of AI. Discussion will include a recap of how to use AI instead of AI using you.
