The La Jolla Historical Society continues its free Growing Together series with a family-friendly celebration of art and community in partnership with the Murals of La Jolla. Taking place Sunday, May 3 from 12–2 p.m., the event invites families to explore La Jolla’s vibrant public art scene through a self-guided mini mural tour, complete with a downloadable map, scavenger hunt, music, and hands-on activities at each stop. Shaded stations will also feature mural highlights and additional information for those who want to keep exploring beyond the event. The afternoon includes a hands-on workshop led by Kaori Fukuyama, as well as a separate collaborative mural where guests of all ages can contribute to a shared community artwork. Along with Murals of La Jolla, La Jolla Historical Society is also working with Songs4Smiles, a student-run nonprofit of students from the San Diego Youth Symphony, to provide live music to eventgoers. Dye with Fresh Indigo Natural Dye in Bonita! Saturday, August 29, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. There are many ways of dyeing with indigo, but its magic can be experienced in its most direct way by simply using fresh indigo leaves, water, and air! This workshop is a unique opportunity to work with indigo from the “ground up” and understand the beautiful chemistry of indigo and create a beautiful silk scarf in the setting it was grown. This workshop is held at an off-site location, at the inspirational Ranchito Milkyway farm in Bonita. This class is appropriate for ages 12+ years old or 8+yrs with an accompanying adult. Monday – Friday, March 30 – April 3, from 1 – 4 p.m. Ages 7-12 welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your child will explore a fun variety of crafts this Spring Break, from Ceramics to Macrame’ and Hand Sewing! Along the way, we’ll make fun, high-quality crafts that kids can take home, like a ceramic snack plate, a macrame’ plushie hanger and a handmade plushie! Our projects are geared to build and hone skills such as hand-eye coordination, fine motor skills, creativity, comprehension + exploration of a variety of materials. Projects and depth of craft exploration are matched up to the child’s age and ability. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station, and they’re camp is ending as ours begins, we are happy to walk your child from their camp to the studio.
