The meal will conclude with ube cheesecake with caramelized pineapple purée, toasted coconut and whipped cream. The symposium’s three thematic sessions–Aural Pleasures, Interstitial, and Passing On–provide a rigorous framework for investigating the intersections of sound, memory, and the ephemeral. By interrogating the "afterlives" of the archive and the "monstrosity" of the spirit, these proceedings seek to redefine the boundaries of how art mediates historical identity and ontological presence. This month's featured film is "Summer of Soul (...Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised)" (2021) in celebration of Black History Month. A powerful and transporting documentary—part music film, part historical record—created around an epic event that celebrated Black history, culture, and fashion. Over the course of six weeks in the summer of 1969, just 100 miles south of Woodstock, The Harlem Cultural Festival was filmed in Mount Morris Park. The footage was largely forgotten—until now. "Summer of Soul" shines a light on the importance of history to our spiritual well-being and stands as a testament to the healing power of music during times of unrest, both past and present.
