The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 27, Vania Pimentel will perform a variety of Brazilian music on piano. Concert pianist Vania Pimentel, born and raised in Brazil, has been promoting Brazilian music in creative recital programs. She has a BA in Music and another BA in Philosophy from Brazil, KA graduate artist diploma from Germany, Masters in Piano Performance and Pedagogy, and DMA from the University of Houston. Her doctoral dissertation was on Brazilian toccatas, and her CD “Brazilian Toccatas and Toccatinas” was praised by the Brazilian Academy of Music and newspaper critics in Rio de Janeiro in the year of 2000, five hundreds years of Brazil’s discovery by the Portuguese. Dr. Pimentel became a member of Pi Kappa Lambda National Music Honor Society, and worked as an assistant teacher at the Moores School of Music and the Texas Music Festival. In Brazil, she had worked for 14 years as a piano professor in Curitiba, PR. Her first award at a piano competition was at the age of seven in Rio de Janeiro. Her top awards are from J. S. Bach International Piano Competition in Paris (1984), and Jaen Competition in Spain (1982). Dr. Pimentel lived in Italy from 2005 until 2009, and performed at the series Pianomaster in Gravedonamon Lake Como, and chamber music at the Blaue Blumen concerts in Frankfurt. Afterwards, she lived in San Diego until 2022. She performed recitals at Palomar College, Fallbrook Library, Coronado Library, Encinitas Library, the Athenaeum, Carmel Valley Library, and chamber music in Temecula: Classics at the Merc. She performs frequently in Brazil, and has given masterclasses at many universities there. In 2020, she performed and taught at the 37th Music Workshop of Curitiba, in Paraná state. Last year she presented a solo recital during the Music Week of Lapinha, PR, and last April at the Chapel Santa Maria in Curitiba. Currently she lives in Miami.

Make Tiny Ceramics! Sunday, October 6, 3-5 p.m. Join me in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! This class includes clay, under glazing and firing of the clay. The clay cannot be taken home at the time of the class because it must be kiln fired. The turn around is 1-2 weeks for drying, glazing, and firing before you pick up your miniature creations. No experience necessary. Join us in the woodshop for this 5-hour brush making workshop! We will cover shop safety and how to use various machines such as the bandsaw, spindle sander, edge sander, and drill press. You will hone your carving skills by adding curves and texture to your piece. We will build upon machine knowledge and cover wood shaping using various hand tools such as rasps, files, spoke shaves, hand planes, chisels, and gouges. We will also discuss design principles, functional applications, the properties of wood, and brush materials such as Tampico fibers. At the end of the workshop, each student will leave with a unique brush to be used in the home, the shop, or as a beautiful sculpture or gift. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. Saturday, November 2, 2024 7:30 p.m. The fall series opens Saturday, November 2, with the Ben Williams Quartet, featuring bassist Williams with vibraphonist Sasha Berliner, guitarist Andrew Renfroe, and drummer John Davis. Since winning the prestigious Thelonious Monk International Jazz Competition in 2009, Williams has made his mark as a producer, bandleader, arranger, and avidly sought-after accompanist for heavyweights in and beyond jazz, including Wynton Marsalis, Lauryn Hill, José James, and Pat Metheny (with whom he won a 2013 Grammy for the album Unity Band). As a bandleader, the Washington, D.C., native is a calmly charismatic presence whose music taps directly into the deepest wellsprings of African American culture. With his latest album, 2020’s I Am A Man, he extended his sonic purview with his captivating, soul-steeped vocals, establishing himself as a leading force in both straight-ahead acoustic jazz contexts and electric, R & B–infused settings. Working in hot wax allows for fast assembly of many mixed-media compositions. The warmed wax is applied by brush then set by heat gun. Once it has cooled, the piece has a durable finish. You may add layers on top of the finish, dig into it, or embed things. In fact, there are an amazing number of ways to work in this medium. You may leave your work at your station for the entire workshop. Materials: The material fee includes three small wood-panel supports, 8” x 8”; R & F encaustic medium; some R & F wax colors; R & F wax colors sticks; heated palette; some brushes; heat guns; some collage materials; some paints; images; things to embed; mark-making tools; oil pastels; collage materials; transfer materials; paints; gloves; scissors. We will paint from a life model on location at La Jolla Shores. Students are also welcome to draw instead of paint from the model if they prefer.
