  • Step into the world of sixteenth-century portraiture and discover how women artists turned the human body into a powerful language. This engaging reception and talk by Bronwen Wilson will explore the poses and gestures in Renaissance portraits, revealing the inventive ways women - led by the trailblazing Sofinisba Anguissola - used "the mute eloquence of gesture" to make their paintings speak. In an era when portraiture was often dismissed as a mechanical skill suited to women perceived to lack imagination, these artists defied convention. They infused their sitters with personality, narrative, and emotion - proving that a glance, a hand, or the tilt of a head could speak volumes. Join us for an illuminating evening of art, history, and conversation inspired by the museum's fall exhibition, "Poetic Portraits: Identity and Allegory in 16th-Century Europe." EVENT PROGRAM 4:30-5 p.m. Wine & Hors d'Oeuvres Reception 5-5:45 p.m. Lecture with Bronwen Wilson 5:45-6 p.m. Q & A, Free Time to Explore the Exhibition About the Speaker: Bronwen Wilson is the Edward W. • Trio Aquarelle takes its name from Philippe Gaubert's luminous Trois Aquarelles — three musical watercolors painted in sound for flute, cello, and piano. Like watercolor itself, this rare and intimate instrumentation can shimmer with brilliance one moment and breathe with quiet tenderness the next. Formed by three musicians whose roots span different corners of the world, Trio Aquarelle brings a richly layered perspective to the chamber music stage. Elena Yarritu, of Japanese and Mexican descent, holds advanced degrees from Yale University and Stony Brook University, has studied and concertized throughout Europe, and performed at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall — her recordings on MSR Classics have been hailed as "fearsome and adventurous" and "jubilantly virtuosic." Daniel Grab brings a globe-spanning energy to the ensemble — at home as principal cellist in Southern California concert halls and each summer on faculty at the Burgos International Music Festival in Spain. When not on stage, he can be found exploring the Southern California coastline in search of uncrowded waves, occasionally with a cello student in tow. Cho-Hyun Park, a native of South Korea, holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree from the University of Texas at Austin and took first prize at the Bartók-Kabalevsky-Prokofiev International Piano Competition in Italy, a distinction that led to her Carnegie Hall debut in 2015. Together, they move fluidly across a wide expressive range, from high-spirited virtuosity to moments of the most sublime lyricism — and it is precisely this diversity of background, temperament, and training that gives the ensemble its distinctive spark. Central to Trio Aquarelle's mission is a commitment to music that tells a fuller story. The ensemble actively champions works by women composers across the ages, believing that great music has always existed in more voices than history has acknowledged. They are passionate about bringing newly discovered and rarely heard works to light, programming them alongside the beloved standards audiences know and love — creating concerts that feel both like a homecoming and an adventure. Trio Aquarelle invites you into their world — one where music transcends the familiar, carries you somewhere unexpected, and stays with you long after the last note fades. • The Center for World Music presents The Bardic Traditions of Turkmenistan at the La Jolla Community Center. Step into the ancient musical world of Turkmenistan with Mohammad Geldi Geldi Nejad, known by the honorific Oghlan Bakhshi, roughly translated as “prodigious child bard.” In this rare solo performance, he brings to life a centuries-old tradition of dutar (two-string lute) playing and bardic singing passed down through generations of nomadic storytellers. His strumming evokes the galloping rhythms of horses across the steppes, while his guttural vocal ornamentation conveys the full range of nomadic emotions—from love and longing to sorrow and heroic struggle. Oghlan Bakhshi vividly animates epic tales of romance, bravery, and resilience, offering audiences a rare glimpse into a musical heritage seldom heard outside Central Asia, where history, nature, and oral storytelling are inseparably intertwined. Following the performance, audience members will have the opportunity to engage with the artist in a Q&A session, gaining a deeper insight into Turkmen musical traditions and culture. (For more information, please visit their website at shelterslumberpawty.com ) Lionel’s Legacy is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit founded in 2011 by Laura Oliver with a mission rooted in compassion for senior pets and the people who love them. Many senior pets are surrendered to shelters when their families can no longer afford mounting medical costs. In other cases, aging pet owners may face their own physical limitations, or families may struggle to manage age-related changes such as incontinence, mobility issues, or cognitive decline. Life transitions, like moving to a new home, can also make families worry that their beloved senior pet may not adjust well. While Lionel’s Legacy rescues senior dogs, our ultimate goal is to help cherished pets remain where they belong: safely and lovingly with their families whenever possible. For more information, please contact Gary Mitrovich. He can be reached at (619) 823-5108 or at garyemit@gmail.com. Lionel's Legacy on Facebook / Instagram
