The North City district in San Marcos is celebrating Earth Day with an evening of sustainable style, community, and conversation at Union Cowork on April 21 from 5–9 p.m. The event kicks off at 5 p.m. with a denim shop, swap, and thrift experience featuring live styling featuring Swap & Shop SD, Positive Phee, and a collective of local makers including Sew Loka, eM Pulse, and Avartan Avenue, all reimagining denim through reuse, repair, and reinvention. At 6 p.m., guests can settle in for a screening of the acclaimed documentary "RiverBlue," which explores the environmental impact of the fashion industry from river to runway to landfill. The film is followed by a post-screening conversation at 7:45 p.m. with experts leading the sustainability movement in San Diego, including Marissa Acosta, Zero Waste and Sustainability Specialist at CSUSM, and Liz of Sustainability is Sexy, a nonprofit founder and community advocate. Come explore the foundations of painting! This acrylic class provides instruction in basic and intermediate painting techniques. Students will develop technical skills in color theory, composition, brushwork, layering, and surface preparation through a series of guided projects. This class is suitable for teens of all skill levels and supports the development of a strong foundation in acrylic painting within a focused studio environment. Susan Walters is an oil painter who has taught art (K–6th grade) at the Gillispie School for over 30 years. She studied fine art at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Students League of New York. Prior to painting, Susan was a printmaker for Ruth Leaf Studio in NYC. The objects in "OTS III" work together to resurrect the spirit of Friendship Park as a bridge, encounter, and neighborhood.
