Salt & Straw ice cream’s beloved Summer Pies flavor series has officially returned, including the addition of a brand new flavor, Peaches and Cream Galette. Co-founder and head ice cream maker Tyler Malek has once again reimagined classic pies as five standout ice cream flavors, churning their flaky crusts, jammy fillings, and custardy centers into a suite of craveable scoops – available now through August 27th. Poway Parade Puts Community Volunteerism at Center Stage Sept. 12 Behind the marching bands and floats at this year's Poway Rotary Parade is a larger community story: who are the people doing the volunteer work that keeps local organizations functioning? “Spirit of Volunteers” is the theme of the 61st annual Poway Rotary Parade, beginning at 9 a.m. Saturday, September 12. Organizers chose the theme to recognize the unusually large number of nonprofit, service and community organizations whose members volunteer their time in Poway and surrounding communities. Grand Marshal John Couvrette, co-chair of the Poway Community Foundation and a longtime community volunteer, is incorporating that message into the parade itself. Working with EDCO, Couvrette is creating a 30-foot flatbed float dedicated to local nonprofit organizations, with volunteers invited to participate together. More than 75 parade entries are expected, representing schools, service clubs, community organizations, businesses and other groups. Among them are the Rotary Club of Poway-Scripps, Poway Unified School District, Poway Chamber of Commerce, Villa de Vida, Poway Library, Soroptimists International of Poway, Poway Adult School, Poway 4-H and the Poway Lions Club. The parade also includes marching bands, dancers, equestrians, vintage tractors and other traditional parade entries. The concert opens with Maurice Ravel’s “Rigaudon” from "Le Tombeau de Couperin," a brilliant tribute to 18th century French dance. Its crisp rhythms and buoyant energy capture Ravel’s unmatched craftsmanship and grace. The mood turns tender and poetic with Nino Rota’s Concerto for Harp and Orchestra, performed by our own Julie Phillips, a rarely heard gem by the beloved composer of film scores such as The Godfather. In this work, Rota’s distinctive lyricism and cinematic color take center stage, as the solo harp shimmers over a tapestry of orchestral warmth – by turns playful, nostalgic, and dreamlike. The evening concludes with the monumental Symphony No. 5 by Dmitri Shostakovich. Written under intense political scrutiny, the symphony moves through haunting introspection, defiant struggle, and ultimately, a cathartic triumph. It remains one of the most powerful and emotionally charged works of the 20th century – an unforgettable testament to music’s ability to speak truth and transcend hardship.
