  • Come dive into a full day of stories, music and interactive workshops! The festival coincides each year with World Storytelling Day. This year the theme of "Deep Water" inspires the festival and its tellers. San Diego's stalwart storytellers are joined by Vicki Juditz of Los Angeles, and Irish seanchai, Colin Urwin, who will lead workshops, as well as perform. The day kicks off with a workshop on "Storytelling for Emotional Impact" by Dr. Almena Lowe Mozon, flows to story concerts, an open mic for community tellers, music from students of the Coronado School of the Arts, and specific children's programming. Crowd favorites are "Art and Stories" with Michael Carini painting live on stage while storytellers paint vivid stories with words and movement. The day concludes with "Voices at the Water's Edge" story concert--always a memorable epilogue! Visit: https://storytellersofsandiego.org/ Storytellers of San Diego on Facebook / Instagram

  • Are you unable to aid loved ones who face issues with self sufficiency on their own? If so, you won't want to miss our next Zoom meeting, where you'll learn to find crucial assistance for choice, dignity, and control within your community. Guest speaker Matthew Parcasio from San Diego County Aging & Independence Services, will present an overview of nearly 30 programs and services offered by his agency and other community providers. Matthew has an MA in Gerontology and extensive experience caring for older individuals and adults living with disabilities. A question & answer period will follow the presentation. We'd like to know if you benefitted from any of these services in San Diego or wherever you live. With government budget cuts, we'd also like to know if these programs have been cut or eliminated. Let's explore the devastating difficulties and challenges too many people are facing alone, and learn what solutions are available in our communities. We look forward to your participation in this meeting as we overcome the harsh struggle to maintain autonomy and independence together. Hemlock Society of San Diego on Facebook
  • Federal workers at the home agency for the National Weather Service are concerned about a potential overhaul by Trump officials focused on cutting government costs.
  • UCSD professors Caroline Collins and Angela Booker discuss our current exhibition, "Take Me to the Water: Histories of the Black Pacific." The exhibit re-centers the relationship between Black folks, water, and ships revealing the deep and historic connection between people of African descent and the Pacific Ocean. Most accounts of U.S. maritime histories are disproportionately populated by white seafarers. Yet, from the 16th to the 20th century, Black whalers, commercial mariners, fishers, explorers, soldiers, and sailors traveled the high seas along the Pacific Coast. The exhibit explores the stories of these mariners, their impact in shaping the American Pacific, and their legacy in the context of development of society and identity.
