  • Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the - handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle - Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) - This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. - Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. - There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome, or 14+ years with an accompanying adult!   • The Los Angeles Basketry Guild and Misti Washington Gourd & Basket Guild proudly present Special classes with Lissa-Jane de Sailles. Four 1-day, 8-hour workshops with 12 students maximum. Lissa-Jane de Sailles lives and works on Jerrinja/Wandi Wandian Land on the south east coast of New South Wales, Australia. Lissa-Jane teaches fiber art locally and internationally and works with basketry techniques to create sculptural forms and installations with locally foraged natural fibers and textiles. This is a rare opportunity for students to learn from an Australian basketry artist! Two classes in Los Angeles area are September 21 & 22, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Two classes in San Diego area (El Cajon) are September 28 & 29, 2024, 8:30 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Classes are for all levels of experience and cost for each is $95 (price covers class fee, materials and teacher preparation and expenses). Tours will begin at Old Town with stops at Gaslamp Quarter, Seaport Village and Santa Fe Depot. In partnership with San Diego Metropolitan Transit System, SDDT has presented Trolley Dances™ for over 25 years. Trolley Dances™ was created by former Artistic Director Jean Isaacs to make dance accessible to our entire community by taking art “to the people.” Each fall, tour guides lead groups of audience members on and off the trolley to view original pieces of site-specific choreography. This is a great opportunity for people who love to sing to enjoy some fun, inclusive musical activities.
