Both works unite the intensely personal with the powerfully public. Shostakovich completed his Symphony No. 10 in the aftermath of Stalin’s death in 1953. The music bears witness to immense suffering under tyranny while reclaiming the voice of the individual. Through coded motifs of his own name, allusions to those he cared for, and echoes of Russian poetry, Mahler, and Jewish folk tradition, Shostakovich shaped a drama of fear, endurance, and defiance. Come attend a screening of “You’re No Indian,” which is not just a film – it’s a call to action. At the heart of this 2025 documentary lies a battle for identity and justice, where militias storm casinos, graves are pillaged for DNA evidence and even proven lineage cannot save individuals from disenrollment. More than 10,000 people have been disenrolled from their tribes in recent years, eviscerated from their communities and families. Research confirms disenrollment’s relationship to tribal gaming and even the corruption of tribal politicians. Not only does it result in financial ruin for the disenrolled, but immeasurable psychological harm when they are now told “you’re no Indian.” This film exposes the dark intersection of power, greed and cultural erasure. It’s a powerful stand for those whose voices have been silenced, urging viewers to join a growing movement for truth and accountability. From the Prohibition through the Second Big War, the glory days of Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington are being recaptured humbly and with humor in San Diego by four musicians who know it don’t mean a thing without that swing: Beston Barnett - Guitar, Vocals Pete Miesner - Guitar, Lead Vocals Matt Gill - Clarinet Paul Hormick - Upright Bass The Zzymzzy Quartet takes its name from a hypothetical “last word” in the dictionary: thus, their tagline, “The Last Word in Gypsy Swing.” The “Gypsy” sound is heard in much of the guitar work, heavily influenced by the stylings of French Gypsy jazz legend Django Reinhardt, but the group also pays tribute to the Swing Era with classic standards and idiomatic originals. With the American Composers Project, Dana Zimbric and the California Chamber Orchestra celebrate 250 years of the American Spirit through music. The series is supported in part by a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. This concert features the music of George Gershwin on his 128th birthday. Come together in support of addiction recovery at this year’s McAlister Institute Annual 5K Walk for Sobriety on Saturday, September 5, 2026 from 8 to 11 a.m. Taking place at the Naval Training Center Park at Liberty Station, the proceeds from Walk for Sobriety will go directly to those in recovery at the McAlister Institute, a nonprofit providing care for prevention and addiction treatment. This purposeful event was made to unite survivors of addiction and community members to bring awareness to a battle that was never meant to be fought alone. The morning will include several events for participants of all ages to enjoy from a kids’ zone with arts and crafts, a silent auction, raffle prizes, and games. To register for the Walk for Sobriety celebration, please visit the McAlister Institute website. Tickets are $35 for general admission and $5 for children 12 and under.
