Other Places art fair (OPaf) is heading south for the first time. The inaugural OPaf South, co-presented with San Diego-based Harvest & Gather, will transform the California Center for the Arts, Escondido into a day-long meeting ground for artists, ideas, and neighbors on Saturday, Oct. 25, 2025, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Admission is free, with a suggested $5 donation to sustain future programming. Since 2017, OPaf has championed unconventional and underrepresented artists, artist-run spaces, and art programming that resists the constraints of the traditional art world. OPaf South extends this ethos to new terrain, creating an inclusive, outdoor–indoor platform for artists of all backgrounds and socioeconomic statuses. This first edition will feature over thirty booths and installations from local, regional, and international participants, as well as performances, readings, talks. The University of California San Diego, in partnership with Point Loma Nazarene University and the Kyoto Symposium Organization, will host the 25th Annual Kyoto Prize Symposium on March 11–12, 2026, on the UC San Diego campus. This multi-day event will feature free, public lectures by three of the world’s most distinguished thinkers and researchers in ethics, artificial intelligence, and life sciences. The Kyoto Prize, Japan’s highest private international award, is bestowed by the nonprofit Inamori Foundation to honor individuals whose scientific, cultural, and philosophical contributions advance the betterment of humankind. Established in 1984 by the late Dr. Kazuo Inamori, the prize reflects his belief that humanity’s future depends on a balance between scientific progress and spiritual depth. The 2025 Kyoto Prize laureates are Shun-ichi Amari for Advanced Technology, Azim Surani for Basic Sciences, and Carol Gilligan for Arts and Philosophy. The San Diego Kyoto Prize Symposium celebrates the lives and work of these laureates through public presentations and scholarly engagement, offering an international audience the opportunity to reflect on shared global values and the pursuit of peace and harmony across nations.

The City of Carlsbad is celebrating Arbor Day on Saturday, April 25, by partnering with local volunteers to plant trees at Poinsettia Community Park. This marks the city's 22nd consecutive year as a Tree City USA, a designation from the National Arbor Day Foundation recognizing Carlsbad’s commitment to tree care and urban forest sustainability. Plant trees at Poinsettia Community Park - Volunteer registration begins at 8 a.m., followed by a tree planting demonstration at 8:30 a.m. - Check in at the Parks & Recreation table. - Explore tree maintenance displays and information booths from event sponsors. - Tools and snacks will be provided.
