Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is thrilled to announce the return of popular Shark Snorkels this September! Join Birch Aquarium Educators for a guided snorkeling experience to get an up-close look at local sharks and rays along with other fascinating species found in our local waters. Plus learn responsible snorkeling skills as you explore the shallow waterways around La Jolla. During this 2-hour experience, which has not been offered by the aquarium since 2019, guests will learn about Leopard Sharks, one of the most common sharks along the coast of California and vital members of the ocean ecosystem. These sharks are known for their distinctive saddle pattern along their back and for aggregating in large numbers — each summer, hundreds of pregnant females migrate to the shallow waters of San Diego to incubate in the warmer temperatures. During Shark Snorkels, guests will discover more about the role these sharks play in their environment and the conservation work being done to protect them, all while exploring their local habitat. “Although the ocean is in our backyard, it may seem daunting to take the first steps beyond the waves,” said Matthew Arrollado, Public Programs Coordinator. “This program is an amazing opportunity to learn about and see some of La Jolla’s unique wildlife with an expert guide. Shark education and conservation are also critical for ocean health, so being able to share information about our local critters, including the docile Leopard Sharks, is such a privilege.” Tickets for Shark Snorkels go on sale August 1. Intermediate swimming ability is required and previous snorkeling experience is recommended. Participants must supply their own gear including masks, fins and snorkels. This Sunday, May 31 beginning at 7 a.m., the American Lung Association in California’s annual "LUNG FORCE" Walk will take place at the Carlsbad Flower Fields. This family-friendly event raises critical funds for lifesaving research, early detection initiatives, programs and services to help achieve a world free of lung cancer and lung disease. The event provides an opportunity for engaging video, photos and interviews with participants affected by lung disease and lung cancer. - 5K walk through the Flower Fields’ beautiful farm paths and Pacific Ocean views - Artists gardens, bird aviaries, park benches and activities for the entire family - A Discovery Zone with hands-on, life-changing educational activities focused on protecting your lungs - A children’s playground with wagon rides and a giant inflatable set of lungs - An important opportunity to unite with families from around the region to save lives by promoting lung health and ending lung disease Who: Individuals, families and corporate teams from throughout the North County and all of San Diego who have been impacted by lung disease and lung cancer will be available for interviews onsite. Why: Lung cancer remains the leading cause of cancer deaths in California and across the U.S. Someone is diagnosed with the disease about every two minutes. But there is hope. More people are surviving lung cancer than ever due to increased awareness and advancements in detection and treatment. The five-year survival rate has increased to nearly 30%, which is a 26% increase over the last five years. The San Diego "LUNG FORCE" Walk has raised millions since 2014 to help end lung cancer. Nationally, "LUNG FORCE" has raised more than $35 million for lifesaving lung cancer research. Guests can fuel their inner superhero with a trio of specialty cocktails inspired by iconic characters, including the PETER PARKER, a Spider-Man-inspired shot made with white rum, blue Curaçao, lime and coconut foam, priced at $15. The BRUCE WAYNE, a black-hued cocktail made with vodka, Chambord Liqueur, lemon, simple syrup, activated charcoal and topped with a lemon wedge, priced at $21; and the STEVE ROGERS, a tribute to Captain America crafted with cognac, allspice dram, Cherry Heering, honey and lemon, priced at $21.
