Learn to throw ceramics on a wheel! Sundays, Sept 13, 20, 27, Oct 4, 18, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., with last class 10 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. This beginner-friendly 5-week pottery course focused on learning the foundations of wheel throwing while creating functional and personal ceramic pieces. Throughout the 5-week course, students will explore wheel throwing fundamentals including centering, pulling walls, trimming, foot rings, handle attachment, surface decoration, underglazes, and glazing techniques. During the first week, students will be introduced to the pottery wheel and learn the basics of centering and shaping simple forms while getting comfortable working with clay. In the second week, students will continue building confidence on the wheel while creating more intentional functional forms such as mugs, bowls, and small plates. The third week focuses on trimming and refinement techniques, including foot rings, surface cleanup, and handle attachment to help elevate and finish each piece. During the fourth week, students will explore surface design and decoration using underglazes, texture, carving, and decorative details to give their work its own personality and style. After bisque firing (no class week), the final class will focus on glazing and finishing techniques. Students will learn how different glazes interact and complete their finished ceramic pieces. This course is designed for complete beginners as well as students looking to strengthen their skills. Ages 16+ years

The heart of the Athenaeum’s School of the Arts is our faculty, whose knowledge and expertise embrace all aspects of fine art. In this exhibition of our teaching artists’ current work, viewers will enjoy the broad range of mediums and techniques that characterize our faculty’s versatility, from painting to book arts, printmaking, ceramics, illustration, painting, and beyond. Their dedication to lifelong learning and exploration continues to inspire students who take classes in both our Logan Heights and La Jolla studios. The Faculty & Staff Exhibition reflects the Athenaeum’s ongoing commitment to fine arts education and its role as a vibrant cultural hub in San Diego’s art community. In addition to faculty, members of the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library staff who are artists are also presenting their work, reflecting the shared creativity and passion for the arts that infuse every part of our organization. Now in its 37th year, a spectacular holiday concert – Carols by Candlelight – will take place on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 11 & 12 at 7:30 p.m. at the Poway Center for the Performing Arts with proceeds from the two concerts to benefit Rady Children’s Hospital. The two nights of Christmas inspired concerts will feature country music stars singing their hits and favorite holiday songs. This year’s headliners include multi-platinum country music star Deana Carter and top country music singer, Maddie Font of Maddie & Tae. Other headliners and Carols by Candlelight veteran performers, include Anna Vaus, Eve Selis with Back to the Garden, and Steve Vaus, a 2010 Grammy winner and Poway’s own mayor. Following the on-stage performances, to close the evening, the audience and stars meet in the courtyard and sing “Silent Night” by candlelight. In addition to the live entertainment, the benefit also features a live auction offering autographed guitars and other items, as well as silent auction items and raffle prizes, donated by sponsoring organizations.
