In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called “scars” and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. September 15, 1-5 p.m. -or- October 26, 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basket Weaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary. Setting provides a reader with a sense of place, and without that…there is no story. Setting is also the time and environment the story exists in. It establishes the mood and reveals characters, conflicts, and themes. Settings can shape, influence, and change characters. Detailed descriptions about personal spaces inform the reader about the characters who inhabit them. The setting can even be its own character! This workshop addresses the crucial role of establishing settings for both fiction and non-fiction. This textile art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. In this workshop, the instructor will guide you, step by step, through the making of a felted flower. Starting with a soft merino wool, you will be creating your own one-of-a-kind flower choosing from a wide selection of dyed wool. After using soap and water to bind the fibers, you will take home a forever flower that will embellish any space. Your flower can be used as a bookmark, tied around a curtain or the strap of a hand bag, placed in a vase or given as a sweet gift…. The possibilities are endless! No experience necessary.
