  • Ukrainian Artists Hold Art Exhibition and Fundraiser in San Diego to Help Ukrainians in Need “Ukrainian Voice. Your Choice!” Art Exhibition & Fundraiser When: Exhibit Opening June 14 from 4-8 p.m., show runs daily 2-8 p.m. June 15 - 17 Where: Bread and Salt, 1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113. A Ukrainian couple Eugenia and Samson Brodskiy were away from their home country when the war began in February and have been unable to return. They have been collecting works by Ukrainian artists to help them through these horrific times and find hope. “We have been so fortunate to find kindness and support in San Diego for our family and because of this we want to share our feelings and show powerful images of the war through the eyes of modern Ukrainian artists.” The art exhibit,“ Ukrainian Voice. Your choice!,“ which also features video and audio installations, will be held at the Bread & Salt gallery in Logan Heights. It will show the war from the beginning of the invasion to the present day, tell stories of bravery, sadness, desolation and hope captured in real time as the conflict rages on. The show is free to the public. All proceeds from purchases of art work and donations will be sent directly to Ukrainian families in need. The exhibit opens on June 14, hours 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. and will run through June 17, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. daily. We are working with a local San Diego non-profit organization, MH Community Preservation a 501 (c)(3) EIN#82-3030713. Donations are tax deductible to the full extent of the law. “Unfortunately, every day brings a lot of losses, a lot of pain and we realized that we can not stand on the sidelines. Our mission now is to be a bridge between people who can help and people who need the help. We ask San Diegans to support our initiative, visit the exhibition and buy an art print or donate money to the fund. Proceeds from the art exhibition will be donated to a local volunteer organization in Ukraine to assist the affected families, children, orphans, and the wounded in Ukraine.” Bread & Salt gallery: 1955 Julian Avenue, San Diego, CA 92113. https://instagram.com/breadandsalt_sandiego For more information visit our web site: https://ukrainianspiritsandiego.com You can follow us on Instagram and FaceBook

  • From the KPBS weekend arts preview: The music in Bizet's opera "Carmen" is provocative, moody and gloriously showboating. It's also distinct, familiar (and used in a ton of commercials): from the "Prélude" to Carmen's "Habanera" to "Sortie d'Escamillo." NPR called it Bizet's "hit parade" on par with "West Side Story." (Warning: that link is pure earworm.) The opera is set in Spain, about a gypsy, Carmen, and a soldier, Don José, embroiled in tragic seduction and jealousy. Pacific Lyric Association is bringing the production to the California Center for the Arts in Escondido this weekend, in three performances. Additional performances will take place next weekend, Oct. 21-23, at the Joan B. Kroc Theater. "Carmen" is an "opera comique," which generally means the plot is progressed with both song and dialogue between songs, and PLA also uses narration of their own, in English, before major scenes to help explain what's going on. If opera intimidates you, this one might be your gateway. —Julia Dixon Evans, KPBS From the organizers: Pacific Lyric Association (PLA) presents Georges Bizet’s opera Carmen from October 14-23, 2022. The performance will feature an exceptionally talented team of cast and artistic staff who will perform the opera comique that tells of the downfall of Don Jose, a naïve soldier seduced by the fiery gypsy, Carmen. PLA is donating 20% of the production’s proceeds to Ukrainian refugee families with children living in Poland. PLA is an independent Southern California opera company that present fully staged operas with orchestra, accessibly priced to the general public. The signature format of PLA’s opera productions includes spoken narrative in English before each large scene. These narrative vignettes, performed by a professional actor, are designed to keep the audience engaged without being distracted by super titles.
