Fixing the misfolded proteins that cause dementia and heart failure - Front Row lecture with Jeffery Kelly, PhD Description: All proteins have a correct way of “folding” themselves into their three-dimensional structures. When this folding process goes awry, including processes leading to protein misassembly, a number of devastating diseases can result. In this free Front Row lecture, Scripps Research professor Jeffery Kelly will share how he is developing novel therapeutic strategies to target these protein misfolding diseases, which lead to deterioration of the heart and brain. His multi-disciplinary research has already led to the development of an FDA-approved drug available in the pharmacy called tafamidis (Vyndaqel® and Vyndamax®): a medicine that slows the progression of the neurodegenerative disease familial amyloid polyneuropathy and the degenerative heart disease called TTR cardiomyopathy. This special occasion will also feature an exciting Book Fair, offering attendees the opportunity to explore a wide selection of French literature curated by Clotilde French Bookstore. After months of anticipation, Alliance Française San Diego is proud to showcase its new space, designed to enhance the experience of French language and culture enthusiasts in the San Diego area. The new location, conveniently located in University City, promises to be a vibrant hub for learning, cultural exchange, and community engagement. The Open House event on April 28 will provide an opportunity for the public to explore the new facilities, meet the team, and learn more about the diverse range of programs and activities offered by Alliance Française San Diego. Each year the ARCS Foundation, San Diego Chapter, a non-profit organization led entirely by women, hosts a Scientist of the Year fundraiser to honor a preeminent local scientist. This year’s honoree, Dr. Terry Sejnowski, is one of the world’s foremost computer scientists and computational neuroscientists, whose visionary and ingenious work on neural networks laid the foundation for the machine learning and AI revolution that is taking the world by storm today. Dr. Sejnowski is head of Salk Institute’s Computational Neurobiology Laboratory and holder of the Frances Crick Chair. He is also a distinguished professor at UC San Diego’s School of Biological Sciences, where he is co-director of the Institute for Neural Computation. ARCS San Diego invites you to join them for a celebration of science and scientists that is set for Saturday, April 27 (4 - 8 p.m.) at The Conrad Performing Arts Center in La Jolla. In addition to honoring Dr. Sejnowski, the program will pay tribute to this year’s ARCS Scholars – all 50 of them – along with distinguished ARCS Scholar alumnus, Dr. Randall Kelley, who has served as Director of Data Science and Machine Learning at several major corporations. These weekend workshops are focused on increasing self confidence, identifying the roots of anxiety, learning coping skills, enjoying yoga/therapeutic body movement activities, and building community with others with similar stories. This retreat welcomes the experiences of all women+. Please join us if you identify as a woman or femme in any way that is important to you. Meals, snacks and water are included.
