Scott Terrell, conductor San Diego Symphony Orchestra The San Diego Symphony Orchestra will present Disney's "Tim Burton’s The Nightmare Before Christmas" Live-to-Film featuring a screening of Disney’s timeless holiday classic with GRAMMY®-winning composer Danny Elfman’s musical score performed live to the film. The concert will be led by conductor Scott Terrell. Based on an original poem and characters created by Tim Burton, the film was first released in 1993 as "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Directed by Henry Selick (James and the Giant Peach), the film follows the earnest-but-misguided adventures of Jack Skellington, Halloween Town's beloved Pumpkin King. Bored with the same old scare-and-scream routine of Halloween, Jack longs to try something new. Convinced that he can spread the joy of Christmas and against the advice of Sally, a caring and clever ragdoll, Jack enlists three mischievous trick-or-treaters – Lock, Shock, and Barrel – to kidnap Santa Claus. Two exhibitions at Mingei International Museum celebrate Midcentury folk art, craft, and design. “Inside the Design Center” brings to life a vignette of mid-twentieth century interior, lighting, and furniture design from Ilse Ruocco’s 1950 showroom in Hillcrest, San Diego. “Boundless” showcases nearly 150 objects from Mingei’s permanent collection, exploring Southern California landscapes through the work of mid-twentieth century ceramicists. The International California Surf Museum, celebrating 40 years in 2026 and the first and oldest surf museum in the country, invites you to attend the 17th Annual Gala. Since 1986, CSM has been collecting and preserving the surfing history and artifacts of this popular lifestyle sport and culture as well as producing fascinating exhibits and dynamic educational programs. The funds generated from the Gala help the museum continue these efforts. The 17th Annual Gala will be held on Saturday, November 1, 2025 from 2 p.m. - 8 p.m. at the NEW LOCATION, Oceanside’s beachfront 5-star resort, the Seabird Ocean Resort & Spa, 101 Mission Ave, Oceanside, California. Rafael Payare, conductor Matthias Goerne, baritone San Diego Symphony Orchestra Mahler: Selections from The Boy's Magical Horn (Des Knaben Wunderhorn) Bruckner: Symphony No. 4 in E-flat Major, WAB 104, “Romantic” Few literary works had as significant an influence throughout the 19th century as "The Boy's Magical Horn" (Des Knaben Wunderhorn); its mix of everyday experience and the supernatural and bizarre were a perfect match for the Romantic movement. Mahler, one of the greatest songwriters of all time, used these texts as the basis for his own creation, evoking the lives and feelings of ordinary people in extraordinary times. (Of the dozen or so songs that Mahler orchestrated in this collection, six of them will be heard on this concert: "Rheinlegendchen," "Wo die schönen Trompeten blasen," "Das irdische Leben," "Urlicht," "Revelge" and "Der Tambourg’sell".) Bruckner’s spacious symphonies are filled with images of the countryside and high mountains of his native Austria; his Symphony No. 4, “Romantic” is especially loved for its magnificent writing for the horns, using these instruments to suggest wild huntsmen riding across a landscape. Gustav Mahler's beautiful melodies evoke the lives and feelings of ordinary people in extraordinary times. Mahler’s much-loved teacher was Anton Bruckner, whose gloriously spacious symphonies are filled with images of the green countryside and high mountains of his native Austria.
