WWII vet with Award Bronze Metal for bravery, oldest Marine Corps League member, and fitness pioneer turn 101, 102, 103 — Coronado event July 17 The Coronado Public Library is hosting “100+ A Celebration of Marvelous Lives” — a public panel conversation with three local centenarians, ages 101, 102, and 103. Peggy Price (103), Walt Travis (102), and Bill Hiscock (101). Bill served with the 20th Armored Division in World War II, crossing the Rhine and fighting in the Battle of the Ruhr Pocket before his division helped liberate Dachau. He earned the Combat Infantryman Badge and a Bronze Star for bravery. Walt is the oldest living member of the Marine Corps League. And Peggy has kept fitness at the center of her life since 1968, when she joined one of Coronado’s first community fitness programs — modeled after the Royal Canadian Air Force. Drawing as many as 75 people — a spark that kept her active for the rest of her life. Three centenarians, three very different paths to a hundred plus years — all in one room, sharing their wit and wisdom. The conversation will be led by Cynthia Mendolia, National Board-Certified Health & Wellness Coach specializing in aging and longevity with special guest Jill Olen, for the National Institute on Aging. Buddy Guy brings his 90th birthday celebration to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park! At nearly 90 years old, he stands as one of the most influential guitarists in American music. As a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee and a pioneer of Chicago’s explosive West Side sound, Buddy Guy remains a guiding force for generations of rock and blues legends. The nine-time Grammy winner has also earned a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, 38 Blues Music Awards, the Billboard Century Award, the Presidential National Medal of Arts, and the Kennedy Center Honor. Rolling Stone ranks him #23 on its list of the “100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time,” underscoring his unmatched impact on modern music. Born in 1936 to a sharecropper’s family in rural Louisiana, Guy arrived in Chicago in 1957 and went on to reshape the sound of the electric guitar through groundbreaking work with Chess Records and influential recordings of his own. His recent achievements include a 2019 Grammy win for "The Blues Is Alive and Well" and the acclaimed PBS American Masters documentary "Buddy Guy: The Blues Chase the Blues Away." Today, as he celebrates 90 years, Buddy Guy remains an American music icon – one of the last living architects of the electric blues tradition. In an age of digital immediacy, what continues to draw us to books? Curt Sherman will share a selection of his one-of-a-kind artist books, alongside the sources that inspired them. Spanning topics from the history of the alphabet and "Katagami" (Japanese stencils) to Walt Whitman and the First World War, his works combine varied processes with text and poetry that reflect each theme. A former professor of design, interior design, and furniture design, Sherman taught for 35 years. He co-authored "Architecture and Interior Design: An Integrated History to the Present" (Prentice Hall, 2012), a standard text in the field. In retirement, he returned to an early interest in typography, studying at Bayside Press and the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library Print Studio.
