Applicable to comedy, drama, and reality, this unique course is designed for creative aspiring writers with no prior experience—as well as those with screenwriting experience—who seek to break into television writing. Learn in an interactive environment the basics of creating, writing, and presenting your first television script for both drama and/or comedy, including how to take your idea to the next step and create a complete half-hour or one-hour television script. Beginning and professional writers are welcome. Prior screenwriting experience is not required. The course will cover: - The steps usually taken for a first-time television writer towards writing the first script (general idea, character development, style, story acts, etc.) - Structure - Character development - The importance of your first script as a calling card - How to find an agent and get your script read - Who should you be writing for - Who does what job on a television series - The outlets for new shows and new ideas - Developing your idea - The best way to write for you - The Writers’ Room - Collaboration processes - Overview of winning past and current television show scripts - Feedback on your current concepts, outline, scenes and scripts Students will be emailed several TV scripts (shooting drafts) in PDF format prior to the first-class session (and more during the course) to be read in advance if possible. We’ll also be viewing videos related to the topics throughout the course. This course will also include special guests, including WGA writers and producers working in television today. Students will get the opportunity to ask questions and get a behind-the-scenes look into how television is made, learning about the different career paths to becoming a professional television writer and what showrunners, producers, creative executives, and fellowship competitions are looking for from writers working today. Join us for Studio Arts, when OMA transforms into an artist’s studio, offering skill-building workshops led by distinguished professor and arts educator. Inspired by world renowned artists, you will explore different media, techniques and subjects found in an artist’s studio. After a brief slide presentation for inspiration and context the session will continue with demonstrations. Georgia O’Keeffe’s Landscapes and Flowers Inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s techniques in watercolor and acrylic painting, create your very own “magnified,’’ open compositions and close-cropped paintings at this workshop. This full day workshop held from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. is meant to get you in the art making groove and develop new approaches to seeing and creating artworks. Whether you have a lifetime practice or are new to expressing yourself, we exchange ideas and techniques in a supportive and challenging environment. Students of all levels are welcome to stretch their creative muscles and build community with us. All supplies and light refreshments for each workshop are included in the cost. Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, July 18, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. All materials to warp & weave a sample are included for use. You may also bring your own rigid heddle to learn with. The loom should be set up and in working order and ready to warp and weave on. No experience necessary.
