We invite you to explore the rich historical narratives that shape our region through this engaging and informative session. Ellen Browning Scripps transformed the idea of what it meant to “improve” a community. When most civic leaders of her era spoke of “beautification,” they meant adding ornamental gardens, grand buildings, and formal parks. Scripps looked at La Jolla and saw something different, a place where natural beauty could become the highest form of civic art. In her vision, preservation could be more transformative than any construction project. Tonight, we’ll look at how her philosophy shaped La Jolla, the Torrey Pines reserve, and the character of San Diego’s coastal communities. Shakespeare Fellow Jack Krepps will present “Shakespeare and the Revolution.” Jack is part of the American Revolution & Constitution History Project at San Diego State University. In commemoration of the 250th anniversary of the United States, Jack has conducted exclusive research on the impact of Shakespeare and his works on the Founders and on early American society as a whole. Further, he has evaluated the correlation between Shakespeare and the events that unfolded in 1776, as well as existing Shakespearian notions regarding “independence” and other relevant governmental issues. But she wasn’t prepared for the battle she’d have to fight next. "Sheepdogs" Directed by Brian Knappmiller In the remote military town of 29 Palms, artist Ted Meyer helps wounded veterans and active-duty service members turn their physical scars into powerful works of art—unearthing the emotional trauma beneath, and telling the stories their bodies can’t forget. "The Gun" Directed by Shaya Chesner Shaya (30) is married to Moriah and is father to Maayan (2). He is literally attached at the hip to his handgun. As a result of the need to renew his firearms license, Shaya embarks on a journey of clarification regarding his fears after suffering post-trauma in the IDF. "Hope… In the Aftermath of War" Directed by Daniel Bernardi After returning from combat, a soldier’s struggle with trauma, addiction, and fractured family ties forces her daughter to confront the quiet war unfolding at home—one that neither of them signed up for but both must survive. "A Ranger Works Here" Directed by Tim Yao “A Ranger Works Here” is a documentary following Oskar Zepeda’s PTSD growth journey after suffering a grenade blast while serving in the U.S. Army.
