  • Monday, November 20, 21 & 22 from 9 a.m. – Noon Ages 3-6 welcome! Taught by a variety of skilled educators and professional artists, your preschool age child will go on seasonal explorations celebrating the abundance of Fall, observing and learning about various things in nature in our on-site organic garden. They will explore through sensory activities, crafts and stories while developing fine motor skills. Campers will make season-themed crafts in various mediums–clay, wood and textiles. Littles learn best by doing and playing. We practice handwork and workplay. We “play” with natural objects and materials such as wood, stones, clay, felt, paper + more! Each project is planned so that children build skills while satisfying their need to explore. Projects are safe, non-toxic, earth friendly, and full of creativity. It’s important that your child bring water in a refillable bottle and a snack (no candy or peanut products please) in case they are hungry or thirsty during this time. In addition, if your child is enrolled in a nearby camp elsewhere in Liberty Station in the afternoon, and their camp begins as ours ends, we are happy to walk your child to their next camp. If you’d like your camper to stay during the lunch hour, there’s a $15 fee for the week to cover the lunchtime gap. They can bring a lunch and have lunch with us with the option to do a fun craft after lunch. Click here to add lunch supervision from 12-1 p.m. Stay Connected on Social Media! • Robin Henkel and Horns make their debut at Golden Island Dim Sum & Asian Cuisine for the 128th show of Dim Sum & Jazz! Seating Begins at 6 p.m. Performance from 6:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Call (858) 578-8800 for reservations! Robin Henkel performs blues with an intensity rarely seen in Southern California. Drawing from the styles of Robert Johnson, Fred McDowell and Elmore James, Robin has moulded his own intense and entertaining personal style. Robin’s performances often include stories and anecdotes regarding the history of the blues and the unique vintage instruments he performs with. He is a four time recipient of "Best Blues" at the San Diego Music Awards. Robin has opened shows for: BB King, Dizzy Gillespie, Bonnie Raitt, Dr. John, Jr. Wells, Jr. Walker, Roy Rogers, Arlo Guthrie, Hot Tuna, John McLaughlin, Todd Rundgren, Nichollette Larson, Warren Zevon, Steve Stills, Dave Mason, Harvey Mandel, Tim Weisberg, Don McLean, Charles Brown, John Mayall, David Lindley, Norton Buffalo, Livingston Taylor Robin has performed with: John Hammond, Eddie Kirkland, The San Diego Symphony, Lowell Fulson, Johnny Almond, Buddy Miles, Big Jay McNealy, Jimmy Witherspoon, Sha Na Na, Papa John Creach, Dirty Dozen Brass Band Robin Henkel is a futurist and a historian. -LA Times Henkel is already playing a shuffle that is neither slow nor fast--a strut, and it is extremely seductive ...Henkel proceeds to play a fast jump progression, much like one of Robert Johnson's fiery paced songs. As with Johnson, it is hard to imagine, if you close your eyes, that there is only one guitarist at work. You can almost hear the scratches on the 78. -San Diego Reader Robin's live shows are nothing short of inspirational. There is something genuinely raw, base and animalistic about his gut-wrenching, honest music. -360 Degrees Robin Henkel promises nothing, if not a surprise here and there. This is just the way the San Diego native is. He wants to shake things up, so expect the unexpected. As a guitar player, Robin can play blues, jazz, funk, country swing, Hawaiian and Latin music. He borrows from each of those styles when he performs and sometimes even surprises himself with the musical direction his songs take."I like playing music", he says. It just feels good. Henkel's strength is when he picks up that sawed-off pipe fitting and puts it on his baby finger and then lays it on the strings of a resonator or Dobro. All of a sudden the awkward kid from Serra Mesa is transformed into the man in the corner at the Delta house party who commands everyones attention. When Robin plays slide guitar, he steels the show. You probably haven't seen anything like this for years and you may not see it again anytime soon. Though he leans toward playing jazz these days, he won Best Blues CD at the San Diego Music Awards (2000) for his "Highway" recording. "I don't quite know how I did that," he says "there's not much blues on it." To make amends, Henkel has vowed to record a blues album next. Maybe. -Mike Kinsman Want to know more events happening Golden Island? Join our Newsletter! Like Dim Sum & Jazz? Check out the rest of the schedule here! • A day full of train songs, with more adventures around Old Poway Park. All free! The Poway-Midland Railroad will be running the narrow-gauge vintage trains around the park for a nominal fee, which goes to support the nonprofit organization that maintains the railroad. The following is our schedule of performers on the Gazebo Stage: 10 a.m. - Hullabaloo. We will start the day with family-friendly folk fun from our friends at Hullabaloo. Grab something from the farmers market and bring the kids on over. 11 a.m. - Patty Hall. We have coaxed Patty out of her pandemic pause for this show. Her shows make people happy! Noon - Cowboy Jack. Cowboy Jack knows ALL the classic country songs, and knows how to deliver them so you know he means it. This man is the Real Deal. 1 p.m. - Sara Petite. She shows what a century of American music sounds like filtered through the psyche of a 21st century west coast woman. 2 p.m. - Clinton Davis. It is doubtful there is another San Diegan as versed in old time folk music repertoire, and certainly not one as skilled at so many instruments. We do not know if he will be playing guitar, banjo, fiddle, or his banjo-mandolin – but we know it will smoke! 3 p.m. - Tyler Grant. We are tickled to get this man on our stage for the first time. He is an icon in that world where Doc Watson and Jerry Garcia equally inspire guitar pickers, and we hope to see more of him, so make sure you stick around and say “Howdy”.

  • The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents the trivial comedy for serious people, "The Importance of Being Earnest" as its next student production! This masterpiece by Oscar Wilde is probably the most famous of all comedies. It revolves ridiculously around the most ingenious case of “manufactured” mistaken identity ever put into a play. Director Benjamin Cole is proud to present this pinnacle of playful parodies of the “leisure class” in the Victorian era. “The comedy of manners style is so clearly articulated in the back-and-forth banter,” Cole expounds. “We’re gleefully challenging our talented students with precision of physicality and vocal delivery,” he insists. Assistant Director Steve Smith adds, “We've kicked off most rehearsals with lessons on "Received Pronunciation," the most standard form of British dialect. Witty Wildean wordplay wouldn't sound right without the proper accents and our cast has had a great time learning and implementing new vocal techniques!” The show runs a daring 100 minutes with one intermission and hopes to tickle audience’s ears with comic charm and charisma. Additional production staff includes Student Assistant Stage Manager, Basil FitzGerald; Sound Designer, Caleb Foley; Student Assistant Director, Kate Goodman; Stage Manager, Paul Smith; and Lighting and Projections Designer, Liam Sullivan. The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep proudly delivers high-quality theatre instruction and six student theatre productions throughout the year, offering accessible and fun training for various age groups.
