Registration is now open for the San Diego Civic Youth Ballet, offering instruction for dancers of all levels, from beginners to those seeking professional-level training. Students have the opportunity to perform in beloved productions throughout the year, including the holiday tradition of "The Nutcracker." On November 5, Sound Praxis presents an evening of improvised music featuring Jakob Heinemann (LA) and Kate Mohanty (NY) playing solo sets and in quintet with Nathan Hubbard, Ryan Ebaugh, and Jonathan Piper, and the duo of T Putnam Hill and Dylan Lee Brown. Jakob Heinemann is a double bassist and composer based in Los Angeles. His practice draws on free improvisation, just intonation, and experimental sound, expressed through a broad array of mediums ranging from contemporary chamber ensembles to avant-jazz groups. Inspired by the possibility of creating complex soundscapes in collective frameworks, he’s interested in music as a communal experience, for both listeners and players. Deeply rooted in the creative music communities of Chicago, Wisconsin, and Los Angeles, his practice reflects a sustained engagement with place, listening, and timbre. Kate Mohanty is an avant-garde saxophonist based in Brooklyn and is a long time member of Brooklyn's DIY music scene. Kate is avidly committed to the process of improvisation & collaboration. "Disappear Here," Mohanty’s second solo effort, was released in October 2019 on friendship tapes. Kate’s albums are completely improvised upon recording. Mohanty's debut solo recording, "The Double Image," was released via GP Stripes in April 2017. In addition to solo efforts, Kate has participated in a wide variety of artistic projects; including scoring short films, accompanying dance & theater performances, as well as appearing on numerous albums for a wide variety of music projects. In addition to music, Kate is a writer and published a solo book of poetry entitled "Back from Brooklyn" in 2011. This presentation is generously hosted by Folk Arts Rare Records!

For some, cheesy horror films elicit eyerolls if not derision. For others, these films hold a campy, or even nostalgic, appeal. Few, however, see these films as critically brilliant or as culturally important works of art. With attention to films such as "Dracula’s Daughter" (1936), "Satan’s School for Girls" (1973), "VelociPastor" (2017), and "Amityville in Space" (2022), this talk proposes that in cheesy horror films we actually encounter substance and significance. This talk thus encourages broader ways of both enjoying and appreciating and otherwise approaching these films. Phillip Serrato (B.A., M.A., Ph.D. University of California, Riverside) is an associate professor of English and Comparative Literature at San Diego State University. His research interests include gothic and horror studies, Chicanx literature, film, and performance, and children’s and YA literature. At the undergraduate level he teaches introductory surveys of children’s and YA literature as well as upper-division special topics courses such as “Cheesy Horror Cinema” and “Stranger Things.” At the graduate level he teaches seminars in Chicanx children’s literature, children’s gothic and horror literature and film, and the gothic literary tradition. He is currently at work on a number of research projects, including a book on gothic literature and media and another on Chicanx children’s literature.
