Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is excited to announce "The Axolotl’s Garden/El Jardín del Ajolote," an expansion of the popular "Imagine Wild" exhibition, will open this fall. "The Axolotl’s Garden" invites guests to discover the world of the endangered Axolotl, from the mythology and folklore that surrounds them, to the challenges they face in a changing world. Beyond Axolotls, the new exhibition will also showcase other unique Mexican species, inviting guests to explore each animal’s tale of survival and adaptation. "The Axolotl’s Garden," created in collaboration with acclaimed Mexican-American artist Itzel Islas, is more than an exhibition — it will transform Birch Aquarium into a living story-world inspired by the ecological and cultural richness of Mexico and Baja California. Guests will explore themes of biodiversity, climate resilience, habitat loss, migration, transformation and care through unforgettable encounters with animals, contemporary art and conservation science.

Alchemy, Resilience and Transformation This captivating dance performance celebrates the richness of Brazilian culture through timeless feminine stories and symbols. Inspired by Brazil’s many dance traditions, it explores themes of strength, transformation and the wisdom carried within the body. Drawing from world mythology, Yoruba beliefs, Jungian psychology, Clarissa Pinkola Estés’ “Wild Woman” archetype and the vibrant rhythms of Brazil, the performance uses movement as a way to honor the past, express the present and connect with something deeper. More than a celebration of culture, this work is a personal journey. It explores how dance can help us navigate life’s biggest challenges and reconnect with our inner strength. Through themes of femininity, grief, motherhood, empowerment and healing, it invites audiences to reflect on the resilience of the human spirit and our ability to grow, heal and begin again.
