The 23rd Annual Mira Mesa Street Fair will be held on Saturday, Oct. 7, 2023, 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., for a day of fun for all ages on Camino Ruiz between Mira Mesa Boulevard and New Salem Street. Enjoy entertainment on two stages, international foods, children’s activities including a fun zone with inflatables and pony rides, booths by crafters, local businesses and non-profit groups, and other special attractions. The 46th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands will showcase the finest in musical and artistic pageantry, with approximately 30 high school marching bands from across San Diego County and Southern California scheduled to compete. Field performances by small bands will take place in the morning (9 a.m.-11:30 a.m.) at Mt. Carmel High School’s Sundevil Stadium, with field shows by larger bands set for the afternoon and evening (3 p.m.-9 p.m.). Following the morning field shows will be a free parade band competition on the Mt. Carmel High School campus (12:30 p.m.-1:45 p.m.). Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available during the field shows. Field show tickets can be purchased in advance online, or the day of the tournament at the ticket window. Field show tickets are $15 for adults; $12 for seniors, military and students; and free for kids under 3. Reserved seating is available for $25. Tickets include admission to both the morning and afternoon/evening field show performances. Attendees also can enjoy an exhibition performance by San Diego State University’s marching band during the evening field show. Parking is recommended in the neighborhoods surrounding Mt. Carmel High. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Carmel Music Foundation.

The 3rd Annual Dia De Los Muertos Celebration is Saturday, October 28 from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. Watch the South Bay neighborhood transform into a beautiful and lively, cempacuchil filled extravaganza to celebrate the lives of past loved ones. The free community event is more than just an exciting experience for the entire family; it’s a cherished tradition that brings the entire community together to commemorate departed loved ones while embracing the joy that life brings. Taking place in the heart of Downtown Chula Vista, the celebration will be filled with a community altar, an altar contest, dance performances, a Catrin and Catrina Ensemble Contest for cash prizes, food vendors, and themed photo opportunities throughout the neighborhood. At the core of the cultural tradition is the community altar, a symbol signifying love and remembrance. The South Bay neighborhood encourages the community to participate in the touching tradition by bringing photos of loved ones who have passed and place them in the neighborhood’s community altar. As a holiday dedicated to celebrating the lives of those who have passed, the altar will be a collection of memories that will be cherished by all. Along with the community altar, there will be chances to win cash prizes by participating in the contests hosted by the Downtown Chula Vista Association. This year’s altar contest will feature three different categories: best altar created by school/students, best altar created by the general public, and best overall altar.
