As CMBC celebrates two-and-a-half decades of unique contributions to a healthy and thriving ocean planet, its ongoing work has never been more critical. Join current CMBC Director Professor Stuart Sandin as he shares his vision for the Center’s future and how interdisciplinary collaboration helps shape innovative solutions that conserve marine ecosystems and the life they support. The annual Holiday Marketplace brings local makers and vendors together for a weekend of holiday shopping at the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center. Visitors can find unique gifts, support local businesses, explore the Visitor Center and make a Mission Trails outing out of their holiday shopping. Please park between Ace Hardware and Primos Mexican Food and take the shuttle to the Mission Trails Regional Park Visitor Center. Please do not park directly in front of Keil’s Food Store or any of the other storefronts. Those spaces need to remain available for customers of the businesses in the shopping center. The annual holiday of Juneteenth marks the historic date of June 19, 1865, when the last of the enslaved Black people in the United States finally learned of their freedom—a full two and a half years after the official signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. The activities planned for the Del Mar Fair serve a dual purpose. They honor this significant anniversary, marking the true abolition of slavery, and celebrate the achievements and contributions of Black Americans since emancipation. Festivities include performances by Blues man Lenny Fuzzy Rankin and solo jazz guitarist and singer Elliot Lawrence. Guests can enjoy line dancing with San Diego’s own ERRRVERYBODi Line Dancers, as well as drumming and dancing by the Worldbeat Center African Drummers & Dancers. There will also be music from DJ Kool T and spoken word performances by host Kendrick Dial. Powering the Future: Navigating the Impact of AI Data Centers and Electrification While electric load growth in California has been low or flat, it is expected to grow over the coming decades due to electrification of transportation and buildings, growth of AI data centers, and a changing climate. This transition will require balancing expanded grid infrastructure and additional electric supplies with the need to ensure affordability, reliability, and clean energy goals. The Eighteenth Annual Lesley K. McAllister Symposium on Climate and Energy Law will bring together policymakers, industry practitioners, academics, and other experts to explore several aspects of this transition. Drivers and Scale of Load Growth: The main factors driving load growth in California, the role of AI data centers, how uncertainty affects forecasting and planning, and how large loads in other Western states affect California. Policy and Regulatory Solutions: Lessons learned from other states experiencing growth in large loads, innovative customer rates, large load tariffs, resource planning, grid infrastructure build out and cost, and system utilization. Innovation and Technology: Emerging technologies and strategies to manage and mitigate future electric demand, including load shifting, distributed energy generation and storage, and right-sizing all-electric loads. Grab the family and make a succulent pumpkin that does some good. Pumpkins for Good invites the public to a workshop on Sunday, October 25 at 11:30 a.m. at Culture Brewing in Solana Beach, where you will turn a pumpkin into your own succulent centerpiece. Every pumpkin supports San Diego Seniors Community Foundation's (SDSCF) No Senior Alone program, which brings holiday gifts, meals and connection to isolated seniors across San Diego County so no senior is alone this holiday season. Pumpkins for Good started in 2018, when Solana Beach mom Jennifer Stein taught her daughter, Madeline, to make succulent pumpkins. When COVID hit and Madeline couldn't visit her own grandparents, the family started selling the pumpkins to help seniors in need. Today, Madeline's friends and classmates make the pumpkins with her, and the home-grown charity has raised thousands of dollars and served hundreds of seniors. This year, the goal is to provide holiday gifts for more than 200 seniors in low-income facilities, plus a holiday dinner and a free, dignified shopping experience for 45 seniors. We welcome you and your family & friends to join us as we honor the rich traditions and share in the experience of Día de los Muertos on Sunday, November 1 from 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Dorothea Laub Building in the Arts District of Liberty Station located in Point Loma! Stop by anytime during the day to join in the fun! Rooted in community, family, and remembrance, this event creates a heart-centered and safe space for all ages to honor their loved ones—both people and animals—who have passed. Through music, art, hands-on and interactive activities, we invite families to learn, create, and celebrate together. This is a non-scary, family-friendly gathering designed to foster cultural awareness, connection, and joy while celebrating the traditions of Día de los Muertos in our community. We’ll be decorating calavera (skull) cookies in the morning. Then, we’ll enjoy music making and festivities before a procession set to begin at 1:30 p.m. Join us as we walk together through the Dorothea Laub and Dance Place Buildings. We’ll enjoy the art, music making, and handmade shrines made by local community members and students!
