  • Composer, bandleader and NEA Jazz Master Maria Schneider makes a highly anticipated La Jolla Music Society debut with her genre-defying 18-piece orchestra. Her latest album, Data Lords, was a Pulitzer Prize finalist, a winner of two GRAMMY Awards, and was named Jazz Album of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association. Known as a breakaway jazz orchestra leader and composer, Minnesota-born Maria Schneider is a multiple GRAMMY winner and the 2019 recipient of the prestigious NEA Jazz Masters Fellowship for her work in classical, jazz, and even pop with the late David Bowie. Under her baton, the Maria Schneider Orchestra has brought big-band composition into the 21st century, developing the art form into an imaginative and beautifully fluid medium. Maria Schneider’s music has been hailed by critics as “evocative, majestic, magical, heart-stoppingly gorgeous, and beyond categorization.” She and her orchestra became widely known starting in 1994 when they released their first recording, Evanescence. There, Schneider began to develop her personal way of writing for what would become her 18-member collective, made up of many of the finest musicians in jazz today, tailoring her compositions to distinctly highlight the uniquely creative voices of the group. The Maria Schneider Orchestra has performed at festivals and concert halls worldwide. She herself has received numerous commissions and guest-conducting invites, working with more than 90 groups in over 30 countries.

  • Cindy Lee Berryhill is a California singer, songwriter, and co-founder of the New York Antifolk movement. She has released seven albums since her debut on Rhino Records in 1987. Her most recent The Adventurist was released on Omnivore in 2017. Van Dyke Parks says “Cindy Lee’s capacity as a lyricist is unique, her insights and raw ability to articulate the human dilemma, is peerless. She deserves a berth in any Hall of Fame, for the humanities she brings to the usual vanities of songwriting.” Pilgrim Church in Carlsbad is an open and affirming community within the United Church of Christ with a progressive theology, a commitment to spiritual growth, and a passion for social justice. They have been hosted San Diego Folk Heritage concerts in their beautiful sanctuary since 2016. All ticket sales for this event will go toward supporting their mission.

  • The San Diego Early Music Society is thrilled to present flutist Emi Ferguson (“wonderful,” New York Times; “irresistibly vital,” Portland Press Herald) joined by the continuo band Ruckus in a wild technicolor romp through some of Bach’s most playful and transcendent works reimagined and realized for 21st century fans of 18th century performance practice. Having earned widespread critical acclaim for its fresh, visceral approach to early music, Ruckus’ core members form the baroque equivalent of a rhythm section: guitars, keyboards, cello, bassoon, and bass. The ensemble aims to fuse the early-music movement’s questing, creative spirit with the grit, groove and jangle of American roots music, creating a unique sound of “rough-edged intensity” (The New Yorker). “Wit, panache, and the jubilant, virtuosic verve of a bebop-Baroque jam session electrified and illuminated previously candle-lit edifices as Ruckus and friends raised the roof, and my mind’s eye will never see those structures in quite the same light again.” – Boston Music Intelligencer San Diego Early Music Society on Instagram
