The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 4 to October 23. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. On September 18, we will have Amy Kanner on the harp. The music of the harp is simply ethereal and enchanting, transporting us to another world. Playing the harp is Amy Kanner's passion! She is grateful to her parents who surrounded her with music and enrolled her in her first piano lessons at seven. Classically trained in both piano and violin, she continued these studies at Oberlin College in Ohio. But when she first heard the Celtic harp many years later, it was love at first sight and sound. She loves sharing the magic of the harp with audiences throughout San Diego — from school programs, weddings, and holiday celebrations, to service organizations and arts festivals. Amy is also a graduate of the International Harp Therapy Program (IHTP), created and taught by master harpist Christina Tourin — the IHTP is a year-long study of how to use the deep resonance of the harp to powerfully impact our well-being on the levels of body, mind, and spirit. Create your own no-sew fabric mosaic! Saturday, October 3, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Beginners welcome! Ages 14+years! Discover the Japanese art of Kinusaiga, a beautiful fabric technique that transforms colorful scraps of cloth into a stunning work of art—all without a needle or thread. In this 3‑hour, beginner‑friendly workshop, you’ll explore color and texture as you design your own decorative fabric mosaic. You’ll be guided step‑by‑step through sketching your picture and then using a simple method of tucking fabric into grooves to bring your design to life, one vibrant piece at a time. Kinusaiga is wonderfully relaxing and surprisingly addictive—a chance to slow down, get creative, and enjoy the deeply satisfying process of making something by hand. All materials are provided, but you’re welcome to bring your own fabric scraps (even tiny ones)—including cherished pieces of clothing or meaningful textiles you’d like to repurpose into your artwork. Each student will create an 8×8” project to take home. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome. An eclectic collective of 19 artists embody the unifying theme “Better Together” in a contemporary fine art exhibition (Thumbprint Gallery) from July 3 - August 1, 2026. Free Opening Reception: Friday, July 3, 4-9 p.m. The month-long “Better Together” art exhibition presented by Thumbprint Gallery is guest curated by San Diego based artist Lourans Mikhail. Mikhail, who was born in Baghdad, Iraq and raised in Chicago, Illinois, hand-picked artists from San Diego, Los Angeles and across the country to animate the exhibition theme. “My vision was for people to feel inspired when they experience the numerous ways in which artists exemplify the value of togetherness,” explained Mikhail. Curator Lourans Mikhail is a painter, sculptor, and graphic designer, who spent 13 years as a US Marine. His own work is inspired by his Assyrian heritage, graffiti, comics, anime, cartoons, and fine art. In his art, Mikhail uses diverse media to explore different perspectives and challenge the narratives of socioeconomics, culture, politics, and race. “Being a curator of this exhibition is another way I get to draw on what I’ve experienced in life as an immigrant, a veteran, as a father…but this way I’m doing so through the most creative people I know.” The “Better Together” exhibition is on display at Thumbprint Gallery from July 3 to August 1 from noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
