On Saturday, October 24, the San Diego Air & Space Museum turns into movie night headquarters for "Toy Story 5," and every kid (and grown-up kid) is invited. October is Kids Free Month, so up to 2 kids get in free with each paid adult! Dress up as your favorite Toy Story character and compete in our costume contest. Follow the scavenger hunt trail for a prize. Fill your bag at candy stations all over the Museum. The Athenaeum Music & Arts Library presents "Habitando, I Don’t Belong Here, We Belong Everywhere," an exhibition of new work by artist Sylvia Fernández, on view October 17, 2026, through January 9, 2027. An artist talk with Fernández will take place at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, October 16, followed by an opening reception from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m. Both events are free and open to the public. In "Habitando, I Don’t Belong Here, We Belong Everywhere," Fernández navigates the complexity of finding home everywhere and nowhere at once. Using Spanglish as a structural tool and the flowing nature of water and air as frameworks for thinking about transformation, migration, and belonging, Fernández materializes the experience of moving between places as a journey toward the self, where memory and feeling continually shape a place to belong. For this exhibition, Fernández expands beyond personal experience into collective awareness through two archives she has created: Archivo de Sentires (Archive of Feelings) and Archivo de Sombras (Archive of Shadows). The Archivo de Sentires draws on responses to seven questions posed to women of different ages living around the globe. These responses have been translated into paintings, with a palette drawn from every color named in the archive. The Archivo de Sombras comprises photographs of each woman’s sun-cast shadow, which act as source materials for the paintings. In the resulting works, the shadows appear as silhouettes, at times merging with Fernández’s own body to mark presence and absence. Fernández’s adopted home of San Diego is linked by the Pacific Ocean to Lima, where she was born. San Diego’s dry terrain, waterways, shifting light, and native flora and fauna enter the paintings as fragments reimagined into new landscapes. Birds following the Pacific Flyway, from Alaska to Patagonia, appear as symbols of movement and the possibility of belonging everywhere. The exhibition design further reflects Fernández’s interest in the fluidity of place and identity. Double-sided paintings hover and swirl throughout the gallery, inviting viewers to navigate the works from multiple perspectives. The paintings become portals for transformation and expansion, extending the exhibition’s exploration of how identity and belonging shift through movement, memory, and experience. Through these interconnected works, "Habitando, I Don’t Belong Here, We Belong Everywhere" considers belonging as an evolving experience shaped by personal histories, collective feelings, and the places we carry with us. San Diego Folk Heritage welcomes back performers and audience members for our annual Train Song Festival. There will be engines running around the park courtesy of Poway-Midland Railroad (for a nominal fee that supports the railroad), model trains in the Porter House, and some of San Diego’s best musical talent on the gazebo stage from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Be sure to check out the Farmers Market from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the Artisan Market from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Old Poway Park. The Master of Ceremonies will be master storyteller Marilyn McPhie. Free music on the gazebo stage, with shaded seating. The performance schedule is as follows: 10 am: Tyler Stamets is a lifelong musician, songwriter, and performer who grew up in the mountain town of Julian. His style is an eclectic mix of unexpected covers and heartfelt originals with a folk and bluegrass flair. 11 am: Kismet brought the Bella Lunas together: Rhea, an ASL interpreter; Sheena, a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult); and Lily, a Deaf artist. Their collaborative musical expression creates a mesmerizing experience you can see, hear, and feel. Noon: JT Moring is a dynamic entertainer known for incisive songs and stories with audience engagement. He will be joined by local musicians Cara Cormier, Richie Strell, and Terry Wardell. 1 pm: Birds on a Train is an indie-folk band that loves good melodies and works to deliver them in unexpected ways. They are known for tight harmonies, whimsical tastes, and an irreverence for everything but the good green earth. This trio includes Kristen Maher, Jessica Barlow, and Bonnie Nichols. 2 pm: With tuneful, thoughtful and melodic songs, adroit playing, and excellent singing, Joe Rathburn has been entertaining the San Diego community (particularly Padres fans) for over 40 years. 3 pm: The Art Street Boys are a San Diego-based musical group that performs original music, in the folk-rock style of the 1960s, using unique instrumentation and fine vocals blend to present a sweet and fun experience for the listener. The San Diego Watercolor Society proudly presents “Wild Wonders,” juried by award-winning artist, Roberta Dyer. The water-based media exhibition runs Nov 1-28, 2026, at our Gallery in The Arts District Liberty Station.
