Soprano Susan Narucki presents an evening of vocal chamber music, assisted by Leanna Keith, flute, Robert Bui, cello, and others. The concert features the world premiere of "Cassandra," a 25 minute work for soprano, flute and cello, written by San Diego composer Adam Greene. Green writes "Cassandra is a setting of ... the famous mad scene in Agamemnon by Aeschylus. Cassandra was the Trojan priestess doomed to tell prophecies that would not be believed or understood.... There is nothing really "mad" about this Cassandra, of course. Not only does she tell the truth, the truth is terrifying." Also on the program, Susan will be joined by soprano Kirsten Ashley Wiest in a performance of Alba Potes' TRINOS, for two acapella sopranos. TRINOS was one of the works featured on Susan and Kirsten's critically acclaimed release on NEW FOCUS. That makes those decisions one of the most important levers for the region's climate goals This San Diego Climate Week panel brings together experts working that lever from different angles: land use and zoning, transit funding, clean energy, and the pollution burden industrial zoning places on nearby neighborhoods. Topics include a new state law requiring more housing near transit stops, rules that let builders add more homes when they build within existing neighborhoods instead of on undeveloped land, funding for public transit, how renters can get access to solar and other clean energy, and zoning that allows industrial sites like warehouses and factories near homes. SEEK FEST is a one-day San Diego music, art, and craft beer mini-festival presented by the San Diego Music & Art Company, The Blank Slate, and Seek Beer Company. The event brings together a wide-ranging lineup of local and touring musicians spanning jazz, prog rock, psych/funk, metal, hip-hop, and experimental pop, alongside local visual artists, fashion designers, food vendors, massage therapists, live painting, and live chainstitching. Designed as a cross-disciplinary gathering for San Diego’s independent creative community, SEEK FEST highlights musicians, artists, makers, and small local businesses in one shared space. Ticket proceeds support low-income musicians in San Diego via the Musicians Empowerment Collective, a 501(c)3 nonprofit, and admission includes beer from Seek Beer Company for guests 21+. The event takes place Saturday, May 30 at San Diego Made Factory on Commercial Street.

He began playing Alto Saxophone at age 10 for the band in middle school, and by age 13 was playing every Sunday at church. It was at this young age that he fell in love with playing his saxophone and performing. While in South Florida, Charlie shared the stage with many notable local jazz artists, including: Arturo Sandoval, Ira Sullivan, and Nestor Torres. When he graduated from South Plantation High School, he was the recipient of the top scholarship award from The Gold Coast Jazz Society. After briefly attending Florida International University for Jazz Studies on full scholarship, he auditioned for the United States Marine Corps Band in 2010 and honorably served at Marine Corps Recruit Depot San Diego from 2010-2014. While on active duty, Sergeant Arbelaez was tasked to go on various musical/educational tours throughout the United States, performing for hundreds of thousands of citizens at several highly distinguished functions as well as conducting masterclasses and clinics at numerous high schools and colleges. In 2015, Charlie recorded his self-titled and self-released debut CD, featuring: Gilbert Castellanos, Matt Hall, Jason Shattil, Danny Weller, and Willie Jones III. Charlie moved to New York in 2016 to attend SUNY at Purchase College and completed his Bachelor’s Degree (Magna Cum Laude) in less than two years. During his time as an undergrad, Charlie studied with Ralph Lalama, Gary Smulyan, David Hazeltine, Jon Faddis, Todd Coolman, Kenny Washington, and Charles Blenzig, amongst others. In 2017, Charlie joined as a member of the Jazz @ The Jacobs Jazz Orchestra in San Diego for their debut performance. Charlie moved back to San Diego in 2018 to consistently perform with his groups, including hosting The Jazz Botanika Jam Session every Tuesday night at Queen Bee’s in North Park. In March of 2020, he was nominated for Best Jazz by the San Diego Music Awards. In August of 2020, he served as Director of Music for Queen Bee’s Arts and Cultural Center for 14 months. To date—Charlie has performed with many outstanding musicians in San Diego including Mundell Lowe, Marshall Hawkins, Gilbert Castellanos, Christopher Hollyday, Mike Wofford, and Holly Hofmann. Charlie is also an active educator; he was the Saxophone Professor at Palomar College and instructed gifted high school students at The Young Lions Jazz Conservatory, as well as having maintained a private studio both in person and online. As passionate as he is about education, Charlie obtained his Masters Degree in Jazz Studies from San Diego State University. San Diego-based collaborators Pablo Dodero Carrillo and Paola Capó-García present a new performance combining processed voice, electronic composition, and contemporary poetry. Drawing on Dodero's background in experimental electronic music and Capó-García's acclaimed poetic practice, the work reflects on the relationship between the individual and the state through a dynamic interplay of language and spatialized sound. As the City of San Diego's Poet Laureate, Capó-García brings a voice shaped by lyric precision and social inquiry, while Dodero's immersive electronic environments transform spoken text into shifting sonic patterns.
