  • Author Jennifer Coburn appears at the Library to celebrate the Fall 2022 publication of her new novel, "Cradles of the Reich". Set in 1939, Germany is on the brink of war and Hitler’s plan to create a “master race” of pure-blooded Aryan babies has been launched. The top-secret Lebensborn Nazi breeding program is brought to life amidst the story of three German women who change the course of one another's lives. Coburn has also published a mother-daughter travel memoir, We'll Always Have Paris, as well as six contemporary women's novels. Additionally, she has contributed to five literary anthologies, including "A Paris All Your Own". Books will be sold at the event courtesy of Adventures by the Book and are available for pre-sale here. She lives in San Diego with her husband, William. Their daughter, Katie, is currently in graduate school. When Jennifer is not going down historical-research rabbit holes, she volunteers with So Say We All, a live storytelling organization, for which she is a performer, producer, and performance coach. She is also an active volunteer with Reality Changers, a nonprofit that supports low-income high school students in becoming the first in their families to attend college. She specializes in college essay development and interview preparation. Social Media: Facebook | Instagram | Twitter
  • Max Roemer presents “Beggars of Bliss, Icons of Loss”, new sculptures, paintings and drawings that speak to the viewer as inner figures: archetypes, genies, angels, fools, and fairy tale figures. The sculptures are “Beggars of Bliss”, large raw figures brought to life from found shapes and tree waste, connecting the pieces to the environment from which they grow, and giving expression to the bare experience of both loss and bliss. The paintings and drawings are “Icons of Loss” that echo the sculptures. They combine figures and words, one-word messages and witticism, in a primitive, playful style. “My art is pure play”, says Roemer, “nothing less.” All sales and proceeds will benefit ArtReach, a nonprofit providing arts education to more than 6000 students at Title 1 schools in San Diego County. • The InterContinental Hotel San Diego, in partnership with The San Diego Harbor Police Foundation, is hosting Home Runs for Homelessness on Saturday, October 22 to raise funds that will benefit the underserved community of Barrio Logan’s Perkins K-8 School. A fun, family-friendly event, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. participants will have the opportunity to request their “at-bat” song, step up to the plate and wind up for a wiffle ball pitch. The farther the ball goes, the greater the sum of money will be donated on each guests’ behalf. With an affordable entry fee of $5, ticket-holders have the chance to swing 5 times, with the option to pay an additional $15 for kids and $20 for adults for a ballpark-style lunch, which includes a Hot Dog or Cheeseburger, Chips, a soda and cookies or brownies. In addition to the home run contest, guests will also have the opportunity to partake in a silent auction highlighting prizes and experiences from local attractions and businesses, and enjoy fun kid-friendly activations including a bounce house and other exciting games. The Pad Squad and the Swinging Friar will also be there to cheer on participants, take pictures and more. Tickets can be purchased in advance via Eventbrite or at the event on October 22, with all of the proceeds going directly to Perkins K-8 school, whose student body has a poverty rate of 95%, a large population of which have experienced traumatic, adverse childhood experiences that affect their ability to learn in a normal classroom environment. Donations from Home Runs for Homelessness will help contribute to the cost of school supplies and equipment for specialized learning tactics, including their Action Learning Lab, a method that requires expensive lab equipment to help students deal with inattentiveness and jitters.
