City of San Diego voters are deciding whether to tax second homes in the city that are vacant for most of the year.

The Theatre School @ North Coast Rep presents a show with heartbreaking tragedy rescued by lovestruck buffoonery in this tragicomedy by William Shakespeare’s "The Winter’s Tale" as its next student production. As the wise-beyond-his-years 7-year-old Mamillius says, “A sad tale’s best for winter.” But fortunately for us, the story doesn’t end there. We begin with a tale of suspicion, jealousy, tyranny, and suffering. And that only gets us half-way through. After a ghost names an abandoned baby, a storm devours a ship full of mariners, and a bear dines on a gentleman’s flesh, we transition into a new season. It is in middle summer that we visit a different kingdom 16 years later to find the baby grown up to be the queen of the harvest festival, in love with the impetuous prince, surrounded by clowns and singing thieves, and on a course to reconcile two kings as a statue comes to life with celebrations of forgiveness. Director Benjamin Cole is moved to share this production of jealousy, strength, sacrifice, and love as our 11th annual outdoor touring summer student Shakespeare production. “We’re thrilled to continue the tradition of offering free Shakespeare performances to the cities of Solana Beach, Del Mar, and Encinitas,” Cole beams. “Some of our top students are featured in Shakespeare shows, and we’re proud to explore more challenging titles they might not have the opportunity to explore anywhere else,” he boasts. The show runs a daring 90 minutes with no intermission and aims to touch audiences’ heartstrings throughout. His research spans global governance, climate and energy policy, technology, and Indian foreign policy. He curates the Raisina Dialogue — India’s flagship annual platform on geopolitics and geo-economics — and spearheads ORF’s efforts to foster international partnerships and incubate young leaders networks globally. He serves as Chair of the Global Future Council on Geopolitics at the World Economic Forum. His recent books include GeoTechnoGraphy, The New World Disorder and The Indian Imperative, and Pax Sinica. Farid Abdel-Nour, Professor of Political Science at San Diego State University. He is former Department Chair and a founding member of the Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies, which he has directed for multiple terms and will again direct starting in fall 2026. His research and teaching interests are in political theory and Israel/Palestine. His scholarly work focuses on the responsibility that ordinary citizens bear for outcomes brought about by their states. Michael Provence, Professor, Department of History, University of California, San Diego. He earned a PhD in Modern Middle Eastern History from the University of Chicago. He has lived and studied in Syria, Lebanon, Germany, and France. He is the author of The Last Ottoman Generation (2017) and The Great Syrian Revolt (2005), both translated and widely reviewed in Arabic and Turkish, as well as many articles on the late Ottoman and colonial Middle East of the early twentieth century.
