Create a unique meditation station or altar! Mondays, June 29 & July 13, from 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Ages 15+ welcome! In this 2-part series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional and fun pieces. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques to create one of a kind ceramic altars. Students will create and build their piece in the first and second class and glaze their creations in the last class. Students will learn the art of glazing, with many decorative techniques. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors in this course. No experience necessary. All materials provided. Additional optional materials available via the instructor for a fee. Items shown in photo (tarot card, crystals, candle, etc are not included). “Stories From Home” is a series of dances embodying the oral traditions of Nuevomexicano, Chicano and Mexican American communities in the American Southwest. Choreographer Yvonne Montoya and a diverse cast of dancers draw upon personal histories as well as stories of ancestral knowledge. “Stories From Home” is a vessel for personal and specific tales, while also offering a broader look at various cultural traditions throughout the Southwest. The work addresses themes such as the Bracero Program, the creation of the atomic bomb in Northern New Mexico and illness related to U.S. government projects, the loss of language because of 1940s Americanization programs, the experience of the Sephardim people during and after the Spanish Inquisition, family, love and querencia. An artist meet-and-greet will take place March 10 from 12 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Cross Cultural Center.
