Often, the most powerful moment in a piece of writing is the one just before something changes- the pause before a conversation shifts, a decision is made, or something is lost. In this generative class, we’ll write into those moments. We’ll focus on tension, restraint, and what can be carried through image and detail rather than explanation. The goal is to stay with the moment, rather than rush past it. We’ll use a series of guided prompts to build scenes that hold emotional weight without needing to resolve. Inspired by paintings of the past, from Dutch Baroque banquet paintings to Wayne Theobald's opulent high-key paintings, you will use heavy paint mixed with modeling paste to create your own culinary delight on canvas.
