Begin your evening with specialty bites and exquisite cocktails, before enjoying a specially curated meal by Chef Tim Kolanko, Urban Kitchen Group. • Sudan's army has lost its last foothold of el-Fasher, in Darfur, to the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces. Now warnings are mounting of a second genocide as mass killings unfold before the world.
  • Artist Mary Jhun has been painting her "girls" for decades: surrealist silhouettes with intricate, dreamlike details. She's also struggled with sleep apnea her entire life, and when she introduced a CPAP machine to sleep better, she lost her dreams — and with them, her surreal, creative muse.
  • Plants that live their lives rooted to a single spot must develop a broad range of defenses to survive. These defenses can be toxic to various insects and animals, including humans. Yet these plants have also provided the source for 70% to 80% of health-aiding medicines. This tour will explore the many examples of plants in Balboa Park to treat with caution. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the first Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 90 minutes and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. • Resonance is a free, all-ages event hosted by St. Brigid’s Episcopal Church and Oceanside Theatre Company, that builds community through creative expression. Held in OTC's Studio 219 (219 North Coast Highway), this is a space for all creatively-inclined people — artists, musicians, writers, and more — to showcase their work and to practice spontaneous creation together. It’s not quite an open mic, jam session, drum circle, or art night — but it has elements of all of these. All are welcome to participate as much or as little as they choose. If you’d prefer to just come and enjoy the vibe and performances, you are welcome to do that too. Oceanside Theatre Company on Facebook / Instagram
