A Weaving Workshop with Rebecca Smith Join us as creative weaving artist Rebecca Smith leads a two-day workshop in the technique of inlay, a process for weaving pictorial and geometric designs on a loom. In this workshop, participants will weave designs simultaneously with the sheer, transparent background or ground cloth. When the finished piece is hung, light travels through the background cloth to frame the design, which remains opaque. Students can bring their own designs and yarn or use the materials Rebecca provides. If students need a loom, they can rent an Ashford table loom from San Diego Creative Weavers Guild which measures 30″ deep and 24″ wide. Students must be a member of the Guild to be able to rent the looms. Guild membership is $35 per year. The workshop is intended for weavers who are familiar with the workings of a 4-harness loom or rigid heddle loom. Students should arrive with a warped loom; instructions for warping the loom will be sent in advance. Students will need to purchase 16/1 linen yarn warping their looms (cost is $20 per ¼ pound cone; sources will be provided). The instructor will provide specifications for materials needed and will send warping requirements to students prior to the workshop. The instructor will provide a selection of yarns to supplement what the students bring and will provide designs for the students to follow as they weave. Downtown El Cajon will sparkle this holiday season with Holiday Lights in Downtown El Cajon on Saturday, November 29, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Families, friends, and neighbors are invited to gather for an evening filled with festive fun, live entertainment, and the magic of the season. The heart of Downtown El Cajon will transform into a winter wonderland where visitors can shop an artisan market featuring local vendors, experience the magic of a Snow Zone complete with Santa’s magic snow bubble machines, and enjoy a variety of kids activities throughout the night. Guests can take photos with Santa, listen to live music, and watch as the holiday tree comes to life during a special lighting ceremony led by Mayor Bill Wells at 6:15 p.m. Children will also delight in riding a trackless train through the beautifully decorated streets, adding to the evening’s holiday charm. About Hugo Nogueira: Hugo Nogueira won the 2011 American Guitar Society competition in Los Angeles, California. After attending three prestigious conservatories in Brazil (and studying with one of the most renowned Brazilian guitar pedagogues, Henrique Pinto), he obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Composition in 2007 and a teaching credential in 2010. Hugo continued his studies earning his Master’s Degree in Guitar Performance at Azusa Pacific University. Additionally, he has had masterclasses with world class guitarists such as Ana Vidovic, Jason Vieaux, Scott Tennant, and Marc Teicholz. Hugo has also participated at guitar festivals such as La Guitarra in San Luis Obispo, Sierra Nevada Guitar Festival, and New Mexico Guitar Festival. In 2012, Hugo Nogueira performed and gave masterclasses at Cal State San Bernardino and University of Redlands. Awarded an assistantship in the fall of 2013, Hugo began to work on his Doctorate in Classical Guitar Performance at UNLV with the internationally acclaimed concert guitarist, Ricardo Cobo. In 2014 and 2015, Hugo was invited to be part of the guitar competition committee at the Clark County School District, Las Vegas Academy of Arts, and Junior festival in Las Vegas, Nevada. In the last few years, Hugo has been performing in different states across the U.S such as California, Wyoming, Nevada, New Mexico, Florida, Ohio, Washington DC, and Michigan. In May 2017, Hugo Nogueira graduated with a Doctor of Musical Arts. In 2018, Dr. Nogueira was invited by the South Bay MTAC (Music Teachers' Association of California) to give a lecture-recital about the Spanish composer, Francisco Tárrega. In following years, Dr. Nogueira performed with in Panamá, Portugal, Brazil, England, USA and Norway. Dr. Nogueira is currently teaching classical guitar at Los Angeles Pierce College, Oxnard College, and Ventura College in Southern California.
