  • Lecture title: The sweet side of drug discovery: How sugars can help shape the future of medicines - Front Row lecture with Yuzhong Liu, PhD Description: Some of the most powerful medicines we use today come from natural products, which are specialized molecules that plants and microbes have evolved over millions of years. Sugars play a key role in these compounds—determining how the molecule behaves, where it travels in the body and how strongly it activates the immune system. In this free Front Row lecture, Scripps Research chemist Yuzhong Liu will demonstrate how her lab uses synthetic biology to decode the role of sugars in medicine—helping scientists build next-generation vaccine adjuvants, cancer therapies and safer treatments. ABOUT SCRIPPS RESEARCH Scripps Research is an independent, nonprofit biomedical institute based in La Jolla, California, and ranked one of the most influential in the world for its impact on innovation. The Front Row lecture series, now in its ninth season, offers an exclusive glimpse into groundbreaking scientific discoveries in action. Join us—in the front row. Reserve your seat! • Undeterred by armed soldiers, evasive politicians, and riot police, journalist Amy Goodman has reported some of the most consequential stories of our time. "Steal This Story, Please!" is a gripping portrait of the trailblazer whose unwavering commitment to truth-telling spans three decades of turbulent history. From the frontlines of global conflicts to the organized chaos of her daily news show Democracy Now!, Goodman broadcasts stories and voices routinely silenced by commercial media. Oscar-nominated filmmakers Carl Deal and Tia Lessin ("Trouble the Water," "The Janes") take us behind the scenes with the warm, wisecracking granddaughter of an Orthodox rabbi — raised in a tradition of asking hard questions – as she navigates a news landscape reshaped by technology, corporate consolidation, and political assaults on the press – and on truth itself. Urgent, provocative and unexpectedly funny, "Steal This Story, Please!" is both a call to action and a celebration of resistance, posing the question: what happens to democracy when the press surrenders to power? • “Trial by Jury,” Gilbert & Sullivan’s comic operetta, a gem rarely performed by major opera companies, returns to San Diego County for the first time since 2009 on April 25 & 26 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Escondido, courtesy of Genesis Opera Theatre. The 30-minute operetta in English is a fast-paced contemporary courtroom circus where love, law and public opinion collide in the most delightfully ridiculous ways. Imagine sharp suits, social-media-level drama, your favorite reality TV show, and a legal system that’s just as theatrical as the people in it. Gilbert & Sullivan’s signature wit, speed and musical charm are clever, chaotic and irresistibly fun. Genesis Opera Theatre production features an all-star cast of talent drawn from Southern California’s San Diego, Los Angeles, Orange and Riverside counties, is directed by Patrick Anderson with musical director Abraham Fabella. “This fun production will be a new experience for most who attend. And those who know Gilbert & Sullivan’s repertoire will be thrilled with the accompanying concert of G&S favorites. I’m thrilled to be able to share this program with new audiences and seasoned operagoers alike,” says Genesis Opera Theatre founder Cynthia Leigh. Proceeds from the performances Saturday April 25 at 7 p.m. and Sunday April 26 at 3 p.m. benefit Genesis Opera Theatre and Trinity Episcopal Church. Genesis Opera Theatre’s mission is to make opera accessible to people of all ages for a reasonable price, and with the hope of inspiring young people to explore the art form further as participants or patrons. Donations are welcome at GenesisOperaTheatre.com.
