  • Pride season has arrived, and Songwriter Sanctuary San Diego is celebrating on Friday, June 26 with their annual LGBTQ+ Pride edition. For this year’s event, the monthly music series (recently recognized by San Diego Pride with the Spirit of Stonewall Larry T. Baza Arts and Culture award) presents a lineup of local acts from Raspberry Management, a queer-forward artist collective supporting some of the best rising talent in San Diego and beyond. This Nashville-style songwriter’s round will be guest-hosted by Raspberry artist and Songwriter Sanctuary board member Rachel Hall (aka Mariela), featuring stripped-down versions of original music from Saint Misty, The Dimes, and Daddy. Julian Forest will start off the evening at 6 p.m. with an unplugged busking set on the sidewalk stage to accompany Songwriter Sanctuary’s community care initiative called the “Pre Show Pantry Jam," which encourages attendees to arrive a little early with unopened/unexpired donations for the venue’s community fridge, pantry, and closet. Thanks to sponsorship from Ability Central, ASL services will be provided by Deaf Community Services of San Diego for music in the sanctuary. About the Artists Saint Misty is a synth-pop artist whose sticky-sweet hooks wrap around songs that reckon with identity and escape, tracing her journey from radical Christian cult to lesbian icon in the making. The Dimes are a 6-piece nonsense rock band known for their high-energy sets that swing from riot grrrl to queer yearning to absurdism. The Dimes are here to make you feel something. Anything! Daddy is the intoxicating and sparkly indie glitter rock project of vocalist/guitarist Brooke Patterson and bassist Jessica Muchnick—two high school acquaintances turned best friends. (Pantry Jam artist) Julian Forest is a songwriter, lyricist and musician who floats between genres with ease, telling stories laced with imagery and themes of empowerment. • Some stories and poems are shaped as much by what remains unsaid as by what is spoken. In this two-part generative workshop for poets, fiction writers, memoirists, and hybrid writers, we’ll explore how silence, omission, secrecy, emotional restraint, and gaps in knowledge can create tension, complexity, and resonance on the page. Through readings, discussion, prompts, and in-class writing, participants will examine how writers use absence as a craft tool and how family secrets, cultural silences, missing histories, and unanswered questions can become powerful literary material. We’ll read and discuss work by writers such as Yusef Komunyakaa, Natasha Trethewey, Agha Shahid Ali, Lucille Clifton, Eduardo C. Corral, Jhumpa Lahiri, Alexander Chee, James Baldwin, Akwaeke Emezi, and Jesmyn Ward. The first session will focus on silence as craft, emotional restraint, and writing around what cannot be directly said. The second session will explore revision strategies, omission as a source of tension and meaning, and will conclude with a supportive sharing session for both poetry and prose writers. • How does a poem hold emotional weight? In this generative poetry workshop, students will explore how contemporary poets create emotional resonance through image systems, repetition, compression, silence, pacing, and associative movement. Rather than focusing on traditional form, this class investigates how emotional pressure shapes structure and language. Through readings, discussion, prompts, and in-class writing, participants will generate new work rooted in recurring imagery, emotional tension, obsession, memory, and embodied experience. We will read work by poets such as Marie Howe, Ada Limón, Ilya Kaminsky, Sharon Olds, Aracelis Girmay, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and Mark Doty. This workshop is ideal for poets and hybrid writers interested in creating work that feels emotionally layered, image-driven, and structurally alive. • All participants should rent, buy, or download "The Book of Alchemy" by Suleika Jaouad before the first class. In this 8-week workshop, we will use "The Book of Alchemy" by Suleika Jaouad as a guide for a sustained creative practice. Participants will write daily for fifty days, choosing between two prompts each day. The goal is not perfection, but presence. Most prompts can be completed in 10 to 15 minutes, making it manageable even during busy weeks. We will meet once a week for 90 minutes to share selected pieces and engage in thoughtful, witness-based reflection. This is not a critique class. Instead, we will practice deep listening and generous response, noticing what lingers, what surprises us, and what themes begin to emerge across the weeks. Through daily writing and weekly gathering, participants will: - Build consistency and confidence in their writing practice - Discover patterns and images shaping their work - Strengthen their authentic voice - Experience the power of being heard without judgment - Come ready to write, to listen, and to build a sustainable writing practice.
