Exploring versatile running stitches December 15, from 9:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Just in time for the holidays, come and create a beautiful purse that can be used as a gift or as a soft pouch for jewelry. We will be using hand-dyed bamboo and wool felt as our canvas. The technique of decorating a fabric surface with running stitches can be found in many cultures and in the scope of this class we’ll focus on two types of stitching: Sashiko, which means “little stabs” in Japanese, and Kantha, which translates to “rags” in Sanskrit. The primary and traditional function of the stitching was: to mend and reuse old but treasured fabric, to gather layers of fabric which then provided warmth and insulation, and/or strengthen the fabric for heavy usage. However, the decorative aspect of this timeless practice became just as important and valued, and its rich “vocabulary” translates into endless pattern variations. This class is appropriate for ages 10+years and older. The act of painting itself was at the heart of Fauvism. It was the first movement to insist in explicit terms that a painting is the canvas and the pigments—not the subject. This class will explore the Postimpressionist movement that led to the Fauve movement strongly influencing the art of the 20th century. Leaving behind classic color, perspective, and subject matter, moving into exciting, bold, vibrant colors, spontaneous compositions, and highly gestural application of paint techniques is what we will explore painting in session. A pink sky? Why not! Come join the fun, freedom, and excitement of expressive Fauve painting. This class is for all levels of painters, both beginning and experienced artists. Emphasis in this class will be on an impressionist technique of painting using an “alla prima” (wet into wet) style of painting, keeping loose brushwork, thick paint, and eliminating detail. We will cover composition, color, form, and lighting. There will be a setup for each class along with photo images to create from. I do a painting demonstration in each class. One of our exercises will be a personal still-life using objects that have meaning to us. The best part is that we will have fun as we share our discoveries together. Come join us!
