The 48th annual Mt. Carmel Tournament of Bands, San Diego County’s largest high school marching band competition, is set for Saturday, Oct. 25 at Mt. Carmel High School in Rancho Penasquitos. The tournament will showcase the music and artistic pageantry of 38 marching bands from across Southern California and will feature both parade and field show competitions. It is the largest fundraiser of the year for the school’s music program. Proceeds will benefit the nonprofit Mt. Carmel Music Foundation and will be used to support the school’s band, color guard and orchestra programs. Field show performances by small bands will start at 8 a.m. at Mt. Carmel’s Sundevil Stadium, followed by a free parade band review starting at approximately 11:45 a.m. in the school’s parking lot. Field shows with large bands will start at approximately 2:45 p.m. at Sundevil Stadium. Performances will conclude with special appearances by marching bands from San Diego State University and the United States Marine Corps. Food, drink and merchandise concessions will be available throughout the day and evening. Tickets for stadium field shows and award ceremonies are $15 for students, seniors and military; $20 for adult general admission; and $35 for adult reserved. Tickets can be purchased either in advance or at the event. Stadium admission is free for kids age 5 and under. The school’s parking lot will not be available for public parking the day of the event, so spectators should park in the neighborhoods surrounding the school. Mt. Tour Balboa Park’s iconic Botanical Building—completely restored to its original 1915 appearance, while upgraded for today’s accessibility and sustainability needs. The history of the building is one of perseverance, transformation, and citizen love, resulting today in a magnificent collection of over 1,000 plants, representing more than 180 species from subtropical and tropical environments around the world. Forever Balboa Park offers thematic park tours that focus on the park’s unique biodiversity and highlight the park’s horticultural wonders on the first Saturday of each month. Led by park volunteer and horticultural enthusiast Bill Edwards, the free tours leave from the Visitors Center at 10:00 a.m. unless otherwise indicated. Walks last 90 minutes and are typically less than 1 mile on level terrain. It is advised that potential attendees contact the Balboa Park Visitors Center prior to the scheduled walk to determine if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations to the tours. Mission Valley, an open-air shopping center located in San Diego, California, invites the community to celebrate the opening weekend of the thrilling new "Superman" movie with an event full of action, fun and heroic vibes on Friday, July 11, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the AMC Theatres Court in front of Yard House. The evening’s events will feature strength challenges, live music, Superman and Supergirl appearances, prizes (while supplies last) and lots of themed photo opportunities. Guests are invited to dress up as their favorite heroes to make memories at Mission Valley’s "Superman" movie premiere event, before catching the new “Superman” movie releasing the same weekend.
