  • The health care union behind the tax measure argues its plan is the only viable fix for federal funding cuts to Medi-Cal. But even some of the most liberal lawmakers and labor unions aren’t convinced yet.
  • Even with federal grants largely restored, scientists say the Trump administration is still preventing those funds from reaching them. The consequences, they say, are already becoming clear.
  • In December 1846, the largest battle of the US-Mexico War in California occurred about 30 miles north of Old Town, in the San Pasqual Valley near today’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park. American and Mexican forces struggled for control of Alta California and the battle paved the way to the eventual Mexican surrender near Los Angeles, a month later. As part of the broader war from 1846 to 1848, the action near San Diego secured control of Upper California for the United States and ensured its inclusion as part of the land ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 175 years ago, in 1850, California became the 31st state. David Miller received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 2007. His research focus is the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States. Miller received the 2017 Faculty Award for Exceptional Teaching, the 2019 Center for Educational Excellence "Best Attendance" award, and in 2020 the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture travel grant to explore the history of immigration in San Francisco and New York City from a Catholic perspective. He is the History Department's internship program coordinator. David also serves as the co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History, a joint venture with the San Diego History Center, and can be found on any given day out and about exploring our city. • Award winning playwright Josefina López will be in San Diego on April 11, 2026 for a one-day speaking engagement at Point Loma Nazarene University. One year after her Broadway debut of the musical “Real Women Have Curves” (April 27, 2025, at the James Earl Jones Theatre), Josefina invites the local community of students, educators, and theatre artists to learn about her artistic journey and passion for arts education – especially for underprivileged youth. This special engagement marks a meaningful moment for San Diego’s arts community, bringing one of the nation’s most influential Latina playwrights back to the city where her journey began. Her visit offers a rare opportunity to learn from a groundbreaking artist whose work has reshaped American theatre. Her story serves as a reminder that when young people are given the tools to tell their stories, entire communities are strengthened. Josefina Lopez on Instagram
  • Some Americans seem to be extra-alarmed about Ebola and hantavirus in the wake of COVID-19. But public health experts say they don't expect another pandemic this time.
  • Swing voters in North Carolina say they are frustrated with President Trump and the state of the economy but aren't ready to abandon him or his party as the midterms inch closer.
  • The agency calls the program an update to the Screening Partnership Program, in which 20 U.S. airports currently use private security screeners rather than federal workers.
  • The Ebola outbreak in Africa was announced last week, then quickly declared an emergency. It's likely that cuts in U.S. aid contributed to a delay in identifying the outbreak.
  • In today’s art world, a strong online presence is just as important as the work itself. This workshop helps artists identify their actual and ideal audience and understand who they are really speaking to—collectors, curators, or community. From there, participants will explore how to define a clear brand voice, using archetypes to guide how they present themselves authentically. We’ll break down the major social media channels, showing how to choose the right platforms for your goals, and share practical strategies for creating posts, reels, and videos that truly connect. Artists will leave with the tools to confidently market their work online and build relationships that last. A limited number of scholarships are available for artists who wish to attend but cannot support the fees at this time, contact katie@oma-online.org to inquire.
