Wednesdays, 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. July 30 – Aug. 20 (4 weeks, 12 total hours of instruction) La Jolla Studio This course is for the beginner abstract painter or a refresher for the seasoned artist. This class is designed for you to tap into your intuition and discover your own style through embracing the process. While practicing the principles of abstract acrylic painting, we will work to find a balance between using these techniques and learning to trust our intuition. The focus will be on process, as we learn together how to start, loosen up, take risks, trust our gut, lean into our emotions, and let go of perfection in our paintings. Along with the foundations of color, composition, and line/shape, we will practice intuitive mark making and layering and allowing each of these to inform what comes next on the canvas. As your artistic voice unfolds, your own unique visual language will appear. Materials: Variety of brushes; any tools, palette knives, wedges, color shapers you have (not necessary, but helpful); acrylic paint in various colors (your favorites but also Titanium White and Raw Umber); palette or palette paper; small canvas (no smaller than 12” x 12”) and any size larger canvas. Note: If you're a beginner, bring a basic starter set of paints or even craft paints. No need to go out and purchase a bunch of expensive paints! A medium-bodied paint is best, but using a variety of fluid medium and heavy-bodied paints will give your work more interest. Hundreds of officers in California have been stripped of their badges in the last few years for serious misconduct. The offenses range from sexual misconduct to domestic violence to dishonesty. There are still thousands of cases that need to be reviewed. Plus, the National Endowment for the Arts has frozen more than $300,000 in grants for San Diego organizations. That uncertainty has put the local arts community in limbo. And it’s St. Patrick’s Day — there’s lots of ways to celebrate Irish heritage in San Diego County.

On Friday, July 25, Songwriter Sanctuary will host a special edition performance of its monthly series in celebration of Disability Pride Month featuring artists with lived experiences and/or deep ties to the disability community, including Espi Love, The Bella Lunas, and Miranda Ramos with Dylan Razwick. The event is hosted by the legendary Jeff Berkley in partnership with Normal Heights United. (4650 Mansfield St. Suggested Donation $10. All ages. Doors 6:30 p.m., Music 7 p.m.) Disabled people are one of the largest, most diverse, and most excluded groups in our society. But the problem isn’t disability itself; it’s the ableism (both overt and unintentional) baked into our spaces and systems. Through story and song, we’ll explore how access, care, and inclusion can create a better world for all of us - because anyone can become disabled at any time, and increased access is a lifelong practice! About the Artists Miranda Ramos: (accompanied by Dylan Razwick): Two-time 2024 Best of San Diego Winner in the categories of Best Country Musician & Singer/Songwriter and 2025 San Diego Music Award Nominee Miranda Ramos is a one of a kind artist who believes that a song isn't just sung, it must be performed. Drawing inspiration from her County and Rock roots, Miranda's songwriting is honest and relatable. She performs with her full band, as an acoustic duo or trio covering top 40 music and originals in the county genre with some pop, rock, and alternative hits thrown in (because why not?), and is the lead female vocalist in ALT2K San Diego's Premier Alt Rock Cover Band. The Bella Lunas: Kismet brought The Bella Lunas together in San Diego, California in 2022 and the vibrant trio immediately bonded over their love of music, creativity and American Sign Language. Rhea, a versatile singer-songwriter and ASL Interpreter, showcases her powerful, raw musical talent and exceptional vocals. Sheena, a CODA (Child of a Deaf Adult), brings her velvety vocals and passion for perfectly blended harmonies. Lily, a Deaf artist, wowed the other ladies with her unique ASL rhythmic renditions of visual music. Rhea and Sheena's voices and instruments blend together in angelic harmonies, weaving intricate patterns of sound that captivate audiences. Yet it is Lily, a Deaf artist and performer, who introduces a completely new dimension with American Sign Language. They are graceful together with the music as it creates a mesmerizing experience you can see, hear, and feel. Espi Love: Espi Love is a local poet who residing on traditional Kumeyaay land (San Diego, CA). They're also a vocalist, actress, model, and competitive dancer, and crochet artist. Espi believes in art as a form of not only creative expression but protest, resistance, whimsy in a world that tells us to leave our playfulness behind. Join us for an afternoon of poetry and conversation. Kabir Helminski, the renowned scholar and translator of Rumi, will share some of his favorite poems by the beloved 13th century mystic whose poems are appreciated around the world, and who became known in the West as “America's best-selling poet.” Helminski, the featured author of this event in celebration of National Poetry Month, will also discuss Rumi’s works and the art of translation with Shadab Zeest Hashmi and San Diego State University graduate students Sam Yaziji and Rema Shbaita. Create a collage inspired by the materials and forms used by Artists in Residence, David Peña and Ethan Chan. Reflect your unique perspective on healing through layered textures and meaningful compositions of everyday objects. 4 p.m. – 5 p.m. | Performance by Ethan Chan In this durational performance piece by Ethan Chan, Ethan replicates the setting where his father spends his time when he’s unable to go to work. Ethan dresses up in his father’s daily at-home attire and traps himself in a space with nothing but his dad’s favorite food, a microwave, and a television, set to change channels every 10 seconds. In this space, the artist does not communicate with anyone or leave the room, and his only activities are sitting, eating, and watching TV. Thinking about the act of doomscrolling as a modern outlet for loneliness and boredom, a comparison can be drawn to the earlier act of channel-surfing. Constantly flicking through TV channels every few seconds for long periods of time results in both time passing and little to no entertainment or information being absorbed. As a kid, Ethan would sit with his dad (who identifies as a workaholic) on his days off at home while he channel-surfed. When Ethan once asked him why he did that for hours on end, he responded by saying, “what else am I going to do?”. 5 p.m. – 6 p.m. | Panel Discussion feat. Each year, The House of Lebanon hosts their annual Lawn Program. The Entertainment is provided by different folk dance groups every year that will perform Folk Dances in regional native costumes. In addition to folkloric dance, local Lebanese artist will perform tradition song, music and poetry depicting the Lebanese heritage and Culture. The House of Lebanon serves a wide selection of traditional Lebanese “Meza”. Food will include Hummus, Tabouli, Spinach Pies, Kibbeh, Falafel, stuffed Grape Leaves, Moussakaa, Kafta, Chicken and Lamb Shawarma.
